Andrea’s legacy will live on through her ideas, her initiatives, & the many people she inspired ❤️

She advocated for a European PhD network, stronger international collaborations, a joint research agenda, & for integrating knowledge about placebo and nocebo effects into the education and training of healthcare professionals.

Andrea was an outstanding & passionate researcher who had just been awarded her second Advanced Grant from the European Research Council @erc.europa.eu, a testament to her exceptional scholarship and ongoing impact.

Beyond her own research, Andrea worked tirelessly to shape the future of the field.

Her personal experience with cancer and the healthcare system shaped her scientific vision and fuelled her commitment to understanding and countering nocebo effects together with her team at Leiden University, Netherlands.

She founded the Society for Interdisciplinary Placebo Studies (@sipsplacebo.bsky.social) and initiated the Placebo Special Interest Group within the International Association for the Study of Pain (@iasp.bsky.social) - both lasting contributions to the scientific community 🌎

The CRC is deeply saddened and shocked by the recent and unexpected passing of our esteemed colleague, Professor Andrea Evers.

Andrea was a trailblazer in the field of placebo research and a driving force in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

Distressing, stigmatising & with no prospect of a real cure: Psoriasis means a major reduction in quality of life for millions of people in Germany.

Fortunately, the disease can be treated well in most cases - also thanks to so-called biologics, which attack the causes of the symptoms in the body.

TLDR: The placebo effect has measurable effects on the brain and body and can appear not only in sham treatments such as sugar pills, but also influence the effectiveness of real treatments! 😱
