The medical community had this debate in the 2000's specifically because of the abusive practices of patholigizing effeminate behavior of cis boys. They updated the DSM-V in 2013 specifically to add in a persistent strong desire to be treated as a different gender, not just gender non-conformity.

That's always crazy to me as someone who went down the "someone pushed back on my cis white male privilege in college and I became a much better person" instead.

Though I guess I had the male part a little wrong....

OMG. So much this! For years I’ve heard from my family “don’t worry they can’t do that a court will stop them,” which lol. Now I’m in Kansas and they finally see first hand I’m right and no one is gonna stop shit once again.

This is what happens when one side is allowed to lie about trans ppl indefinitely with zero pushback from the other side. The average american has no clue how gender affirming care even works. One side lies and tells them horrendous nonsense while the other side at best says nothing, at worst agrees

perfect representation of the vicious asininity of our persecution and the banal mechanisms of its implementation: these regular-ass people, the staff at the dmv, dutifully inflicting whatever absurd degradation they're told, no matter how blatantly, cruelly pointless. would you do that? will you?

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.

I know the feeling. It’s definitely not easy but we can all do it I hope!

I know many of you already know this because it’s obvious but you can absolutely take a survey of an opinion desk’s output over time and pretty accurately surmise the views—or at least the intentions—of the people who are in charge of deciding what gets published. I thought we were all adults here

It’s even stranger than that cause every single person in the building is calling you ma’am and she/her and then at the end they kind of sheepishly hand you a male license and say “have a good day ma’am”

If you listened to the limited debate in the legislature you would see they absolutely do not view us as human beings.

Mainstream reporters are desperate not to cover what's happening to trans ppl in the US.

The narrative was activists got a little too uppity and some mild hand smacking was needed to put them in their place.

The reality of a genocidal campaign of terror against a vulnerable 1% makes them look bad.

I understand the instinct to donate to orgs that are helping trans folks flee red states but let's not forget about the orgs that are still fighting for trans folks in red states.

100% the answer is transformations. This is a grassroots - trans women of color run organization that does amazing things in the community and absolutely more people should know about.

Yeah - I don't think they understand how weird and confusing it is for people if you have to pull out an ID and the sex doesn't match what you look like at all.

By law the Kansas legislature can only meet for 90 days this year. Hardly any time to pass anything. I really thought we might dodge this until 2027.

I mean kind of but also they are pointing out that this is something no other state has done before which I think is important. People need to understand this continues to escalate.

That's messed up. Even if you know it was single occupancy, trying the knob is still way better than knocking or something.

Being a trans journalist is going to work and having to cover how your life is now illegal in your state but also at the same time make sure someone else writes the story so no one can accuse you of being biased and a "trans activist" and then they do the story and you still get accused of it.
