What I find fascinating about this shutdown is that Democrats are almost universally considered by their own side to be overly cautious, centrist, focused on avoiding harm for vulnerable people, and … this is no different - they’re trying to find consensus, compromise, looking for ways out…

People will condemn SNAP, saying it’s not everyone else’s responsibility to make sure people get fed, and in the same breath they’ll support farm subsidies because it’s everyone else’s responsibility to make sure people get fed.
