Sound: Music helps deliver impact during fights or ambience during moody or lighthearted moments. Plenty of YT or Spotify playlists to help out - or you could compose your own (a challenging but fun reward).

The more senses you hit, the better the experience. Any effort will be appreciated!

Smell: Scented candles can turn any session into a pine covered forest or a delicious bakery (I enjoy @cantripcandles.bsky.social ).
Taste: Having a sea-faring adventure? Maybe some salmon is appropriate. Are your adventurers camping out in a cold winter environment, sounds like its stew for you!

A few thoughts when DMing an in person game. Try to hit the five senses to bring the game to life.
Sight/Touch: Maps for encounters (I use Arkenforge/Dungeon Alchemist). Use miniatures (3d printing takes time but a worthy investment). Digital is nice but having something tactile enhances immersion.

I suppose it’s better than putting in holes and having the shelves (and whatever is on said shelves) collapse.

As they say measure once …cut 13 times?

Passion/hobbies isn’t much different and if anything easier in my mind. Always time to learn a new skill or pick up something new (saying this as someone who’s picked up several hobbies in my 40s).

I think if it’s financially possible then age/time shouldn’t hold you back. Obviously you can’t just drop/quit what you’re doing Willy nilly but if there are ways to switch paths slowly or still earn a stable income (which might be less) then don’t let fear of the unknown stop you.

Oh interesting I hadn’t heard of those. But yes you’re right Hue have always been expensive. I’ve had these for about 6/7 years now but if they ever die it’ll be time to look elsewhere.

We have some philips hue spotlights setup and on the laptop the hue app where I can quickly change scenes. Works pretty well (when I remember to do it)!

Well this remains to be seen but we just started a new campaign and every player is suspect of each other. So, they have elected to go and explore places by themselves (or in pairs). We finished the session with an encounter that was planned for more than 2 PCs...next session should be interesting.
