The DOJ says it will investigate a US citizen for saying “fuck Isr**l” to a guy in an IDF shirt.
Absolutely the most anti-free speech admin of my lifetime. Probably since the Red Scare, if not earlier.

It continues to be annoying that interviewers don't hammer this more: If other countries are paying, why would anyone move production to the US?

The federal government will punish your university for doing an informational affair at a predominantly Black high school and require them, under threat of penalty, to recruit from Jewish day schools.

A person can certainly have different opinions about the merits of programming to support different groups, but the fact that institutions are being extorted into promising not to "promote unlawful DEI goals" while at the same time promising to "support a thriving Jewish community" is insane. 2/

the weaponization of course evaluations in the Brown University deal takes the consumerist model of higher education to new heights. not only is your job contingent on it, but make any of your students uncomfortable and you’ll be investigated by the government

Not surprisingly given the current moment, there was a Black Mirror episode on this en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkange...

Sorta related: Our Dean, a psychologist, once justified unequal teaching loads in our dept (joint-appointed psychologists & sociologists) because the psychologists manage labs with grad students. Lost my mind: They get to teach less BECAUSE they have labs that allow them to produce more research?!?!

Annihilation Of Our Freedom
As national police power grows, American liberty declines.
Really good, important piece from Dan Carpenter on the historic significance of the new national police force created by Trump's reconciliation bill. This really is a major shift in our small-c constitution. open.substack.com/pub/persuasi...

Some people are just really bad at pomp and circumstance! Similarly, I remember getting an email that said I was nominated for an award by someone else, but didn't meet the qualifications, so I wouldn't be considered. Like Per's begrudging acceptance, some details are just not necessary to share!

You cut off all funding then your allies ask you nicely to return their funding and you give it to them so they can show their voters that they work hard.

These people objected to the very idea of disparate impact when it was used to reveal disadvantages for non-white people, but now disparate impact will be the defining principle to "prove" white people are disadvantaged by facially race-neutral policies and laws.

This is an open admission that this was an infringement on First Amendment expression and association, not a response to any immediate harms.
As such, this is an illegal act of extortion, not a legitimate exercise of federal power.

For a minute there at the end, I wondered if they had the brain power to connect the dots and conclude that the administration's goals are deeply unpopular but they....just don't? And seem to imply it's a political problem for the administration, to solve with messaging?
