I half-joke, half-seriously say I am generally pro-vice, with gambling, especially sports betting, being a major exception. (The half-joke part is that I am pro-vice. Very serious about my anti-sports betting stance.)

Maybe it's cope, but I wonder if these messages have an effect opposite of what's intended, where it prompts people to ask follow-up questions about the very unpopular administration that they otherwise wouldn't, like how it's Democrats fault when Republicans have a trifecta, etc.

Reminds me of the woman in TN a few years back that was initially prosecuted for β€œdeceiving” her probation officer (who didn’t know the law) and told her she could vote, when she couldn’t because of her criminal record. (Case was eventually dropped because prosecution hid evidence IIRC)

That, and I also think sometimes they are sitting on higher chairs so their legs are stretch out more (at least on College Gameday, for example). Regardless of reason, I definitely notice it on TV.

Bias in academic networking A social media field experiment suggests that gender, race, and university affiliation influence the formation of professional relationships among economists.

Academic economists forming connections on social media show a bias toward certain races, genders, and elite institutions, say researchers at @mcgill.ca, Sao Paulo School of Economics, and MIT. #econsky www.aeaweb.org/research/cha...

My suspicion is that this partly comes from the fact that he's a TV guy, inherently (Trump is too but he never buttons his jacket). Not sure if you've eve noticed but on political & sports tv the guys almost always keep their jackets buttoned. It's weird.

Also, because I'm feeling petty: His suit doesn't fit at all. Jacket at least 1 size too short, pant rise about 4 inches too low. Shoes are significantly too light, should be much darker or black. He looks like a child/college student (ironic given the whining about grooming standards).

Like this. Setting aside substance, it's pleading and desperate, not inspiring. He's just whining about fat troops and if you actually wanted to inspire people to change their behavior, this isn't going to do it. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Also interesting that, for a space that supposedly values leadership a ton, the way he speaks does not convey authority or leader-ly-ness. He does this thing with short, declarative sentences after pausing that he thinks sounds strong but it has the opposite effect IMO--sounds desperate, grasping.

It’s a remarkable blind spot, I learned while engaging with activists when I wrote my first book. Just a fundamental ignorance to the fact that β€œthe community” *also* means NIMBYs, Moms for Liberty, lynch mobs etc etc

Does Rent Control Turn Tenants Into NIMBYs? | The Journal of Politics: Vol 0, No ja

New paper in the Journal of Politics uses data from Berlin to evaluate how renters feel about new development after the implementation of rent control.

Researchers find that rent control results in renters being more willing to accept new construction in their neighborhood + more immigration.

In the 2010s, this country's elites were thrown onto social platforms with everyone else and could finally read what we all think about them and it caused them so much psychic damage that they decided to destroy both the internet and democracy to make sure nothing like it ever happened again.

It would be more accurate, but equally stupid, to suggest vocational schools for electricians need to do a better job fostering open debate on contentious issues.

A free society is not one in which the government can use its power to silence critical speech. Decent people must oppose this.

US women narrowed the pay gap with men by having fewer kids Two sociologists found that when the pace at which family sizes was shrinking slowed down, starting in the 1990s, progress toward closing the gender pay gap grew sluggish too.

"The number of children Americans have affects the gender pay gap only because parenthood decreases women’s wages while increasing men’s wages." @umichstonecid.bsky.social

This Midwestern County's Divergent Gun Violence Patterns Reflect a Broader American Reality In Washtenaw County, Michigan, social workers and community violence specialists are responding differently, if simultaneously, to gun suicides and homicides.

Gun violence in Washtenaw County, Michigan, isn’t perceived the same way it is in Wayne County, home to Detroit, less than 50 miles east. But residents confront their own version of the crisis, split between two different realities.
