My Pixel 6 keeps telling me I have a new message from my doctor's office... I responded to it 2 hours ago, 20 minutes after getting it. This is the third time. Since it's about some VERY IMPORTANT matters, I get a minor panic attack each time.

Oh, and UNLIKE Plex, its Android TV home screen integration widget actually works. (The thing that shows the album and song name. It always has since I tried it the first time.) So that's a tiny nicety I'll enjoy if I switch. We'll see though.

I'll report back on Jellyfin once I know more.

But if things keep looking good, I might actually switch away from Plex, despite its MANY warts. (Scrolling is just f**king weird. Its automatic genre detection pulls in lots of obvious typos someone uploaded somewhere...etc. and no random album feature -- I'll miss that one a lot.)

During general server maintenance of my media server I noticed that Jellyfin had an update. I got around to trying it here and two of the dealbreakers I encountered previously have been fixed: Some of the m3u issues, and the plugin catalog.

I'm letting it scan my entire catalog overnight.

Thanks. We play the cards we're delt. I just wish, in college, I'd known what I know now. I'd have stayed in grad school and looked to finish my studies in Europe.

It really is. I'd have left for the EU in the dim orange one's first term, except none of the countries I'd likely fit in with accept people my age with all my medical issues. What I would like to remind everyone talking about Sam Altman talking about the “PhD level intelligence” of the new ChatGPT is that Sam Altman dropped out of college so he… has no experiential construct for what grad school even is.

Likening PhD holders to a (non-functional) algorithm is a form of dehumanisation & anti-intellectualism that is a bellwether for contemporary fascism. Essentially it's a typical — if not the archetypal — first step towards fascism: to dehumanise, deskill, defund, and, ultimately, fire the academics.

Yes, Wood I do, for both your statement and your question. I am in need of three mythic items.

1. The roots of a mountain.
2. The breath of a fish.
3. The sound of a cat's footfall, in a glass, kintsugi, globe unopened for 1 billion years. (I hear a little shop near me has one.)

I once tried selling a literal one of those as a "nascent intelligence." The health department fined me.

I have a friend and former coworker who is doing some APPROPRIATE neural net work at Mayo Clinic. He keeps engaging in the fallacies you're pointing out. Thankfully he listens in earnest when I try to talk him down.

I'm hoping one day it clicks with him how these systems are so very different.
