Seeking Gardens At War β€” Lucy Brewer Finding nature in the most desolate of settings.

It’s Remembrance Sunday, and I recently published a post that looks at Herbert Cowley and the 12th Battalion, London Regiment in WW1. I really enjoyed writing this one so would love people to read it!

Forgot/ran out of character space for this. If anyone fancies a #history read on Remembrance weekend please do check this blog out. I really enjoyed writing this one.

Two blogs in two weeks?

My #Remembrance weekend blog just went up. Have a read about Herbert Cowley and the 12th Battalion, London Regiment experience in the First World War and his efforts to find a piece of normalcy in incredibly difficult circumstances. #Phd

Today was a freaking huge #PhD win.

Seven months ago I went to an archive. Today I finished a massive project off the back of it. I can't really talk about it now..but at some point I'll be able to put out into the world what I've done & I can't wait

But now...I'm starting the writing up. #PhDSky

Good luck for the presentation! I started a log on Monday where I'm writing every little thing I manage to achieve each day to try to help that sense of achievement - so easy to overlook what you've managed to do, but little by little we'll get there!

Still new to the academic blog life...I have one planned to publish on Saturday on a Remembrance / World War One topic. When do people think is actually the best time to publish to get as much engagement as possible - should I go earlier? How do people decide when's best? #PhdSky #PhDChat #academic

Oh that does sound wonderful! I'm now very hungry for pasta

I'm going to pick one of these suggestions, because I'm currently pretty low vibed when it comes to the #PhD.

Starting Monday I'll 'Reframe what β€œprogress” means'. I'm going to keep a running list of everything I do for the PhD, no matter how small, and will review it at the end of the week!

Crucial question - what pasta did you make, and how was it?

The Perils Of A Comma. β€” Lucy Brewer The spookiness of missing punctuation.

It’s #Halloween week! Which means now is a good time to read my latest blog post - full of all things spooky like football, vampires, and punctuation!

And the scariest thing of all - when research hits a dead end ☠️

I’m hoping this blog goes some way towards rectifying that. Sometimes it’s just as fun to hear about where research goes wrong, as where it goes right.

It’s also the story of something I don’t think gets talked about much in academia. It’s about the excitement of making an historical discovery, and the crush when you realise you’re entirely wrong. Sometimes research goes like that, but I think we tend to only advertise our wins.

It’s spooky season, so I have of course written a blog.

Do you like vampires πŸ§›πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ ? Football ⚽️ ? Punctuation mishaps ⁉️? Then today’s blog is one for you!

Would love to get a list of people's websites (suspect there will be more since I last asked) - so feel free to reply here with yours, and hopefully it will help everyone discover new academics!

I'm trying to build up my #PhD website (a slow process alongside everything else).

What do other people post about on theirs? If you have something you'd like me to write about on mine I'm happy to hear it too and will try and work it into my plans.

You’re so right! I struggle because I always feel like I’ve not done enough, so can’t quite β€œjustify” taking a break.

But rest is so important to allow you to actually be productive when working that’s it’s a crucial part of the process. I’m just rubbish at it. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

The Start of Year Two. β€” Lucy Brewer Year one wrapped.

It doesn't help with feeling tired, but in an attempt to try and feel a bit less 'I've done nothing, I'm so behind' I wrote a 'wrapped' type post looking back over my first year helped a little though I'm still largely panicked...

Does everyone feel like that? Is everyone else exhausted? Or are people good at taking time off??

It's the start of #PhD year two, and I'm pretty tired. I don't know if everyone is like this but as a part-time person I don't feel like I ever get holidays from the PhD...do other people observe the academic timetable?

I just constantly feel like I'm not doing enough, and that I'm behind #PhDChat

That’s a tough ask because they typically need a period of cold. Kind of depends where you are but you could try looking at the Wambugu Apple, which was developed in Kenya.

I have two. One of the trees is kind of sad but had three gorgeous look big red apples this year. I came out last weekend to find every one stolen (one discarded in the middle of the lawn half eaten) 😩

As a PhD student at Greenwich it wasn’t great comms to get the email informing us well after finishing the BBC article.

Suspect this will create an interesting environment in terms of stability with supervisors over the next few years particularly given the redundancies that just happened…
