My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”
Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

To be fair, this is a kid who's seen both parents have federal grants terminated this year - hopefully the average young person isn't quite as discouraged (though our current reality warrants it), and even more hopefully we'll rebuild American democracy and science so they won't have reason to be.

One of my students who was very interested in biomedical research and wanted to apply to grad school decided to take the LSAT and apply to law school. The main driver was the uncertainty & turmoil of federally funded research. It’s the first law school recommendation I have written in my career.

Science will be much more efficient without scientists.
Universities are being destroyed because we don't NEED them anymore.
Instead, all existing data will be fed to AI "agents" who will mine them to "test new hypotheses" and "generate scientific breakthroughs". 🤨🤢🤮

great article. Agree on point 2 - we all need to think more like engineers. Disagree on the premise of point 1 - no one is keeping engineers out, rather some engineers are daunted by the complexity of biology and choose simpler systems to explore.

Neuroscience needs engineers—for more reasons than you think
Adopting an engineering mindset will help the field focus its research priorities.
"So let’s not confine engineers to the workshop or the data center. Let’s bring them into neuroscience, as scientists. And at the same time, it won’t hurt to try to think like engineers ourselves, at least some of the time."

After 13 years in the US, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave. Having packed up everything and rethought about priorities, rather painstakingly, while I’m sad to leave the life I’ve made here, I’m also relieved that I won’t have to plan my life around immigration policies anymore.
