Exciting news! We’ve discovered beaver signs on the River Trent at The Wolseley Centre.

We don’t know where the beaver came from. We’ve been monitoring beaver activity on the Trent for a while, alongside work to bring wild beavers back to Staffs (requires a licence from Natural England).

A graph showing the number of properties at medium flood risk from 2020 - 2100. It shows the current number of properties is already equal to 2018 estimates for 2090 (400,00) and is now estimated to be 634,000 by 2100.

In 2018, Audit Scotland predicted that 400,000 properties in Scotland would be at medium flood risk by 2090.

That number was reached in 2025.

It's essential that we implement nature-based solutions now to address this alarming trend.

Macronychus quadrituberculatus, which we've fondly nicknamed the Riverwood Riffle Beetle, has been recorded in Staffordshire for the first time in over 150 years.

This is a rare species in Europe. It is a flagship indicator species for healthy lowland river reaches. @coleopsoc.bsky.social

250-500 years ago, the freshwater white-clawed crayfish was recorded across much of England (although not Ireland). It is now steeply declining in Britain due to the introduction of the signal crayfish which carries crayfish plague. 🦞🀍 Map from my #AtlasOfEarlyModernWildlife #envhist #biodiversity

Absolutely crawling with #invasive #nonnative Signal Crayfish in Culford Stream including one (lower right) that seemed to be diseased. Note the diagnostic red under claw of this angry one, to separate it from the native White-clawed.
