In the time since he posted this, the LDS church has significantly softened their stance towards the LGBTQ community and most members think it’s just a matter of time before they openly accept them as members.

Nobody who was around to hear the discourse and the early review bombing in December 2024 could possibly believe that he’s including them to *gain* readers.

The epic fantasy arena doesn’t have anyone writing as progressive as he does and the the readers of the genre often seem stuck in the 80’s.

It’s perfectly fine if someone draws the line there and doesn’t want to contribute indirectly to any churches, but the overwhelming majority of Sanderson criticism online is just factually wrong. Which seems counterproductive to progressive goals.

Actually he doesn’t, really. He’s been very open about when and where he disagrees with the church and quite a few people attribute their recent softening on all things LGBTQ to the size of his influence. They are almost staunchly apolitical except when it comes to government targeting of minority

I’d say his more recent centering of long term lgbtq characters cost him quite a bit with fantasy readers. Before WaT even dropped there were dozens of articles out from church groups condemning it. And you can still go and see an early flood of 1-star reviews across all platforms yelling about it.

He had a trans character more than a decade ago. He had pretty clearly gay characters more than a decade ago.

People saying he’s “come far” didn’t really read his earlier books very close.

I think Sanderson has some of the most human characters in modern fantasy.

Have you actually watched his lectures? They all very clearly start with him pointing out that there is no secret process for creating success.

Some authors improve a bit on a reread. Sanderson does this more than the rest. The Way of Kings is fantastic on a first read. Consistently emotional on rereads.

The various AI companion subs are all melting down. I genuinely think lots of people are going to harm themselves.

The LDS has shifted their stance on lgbtq issues in the last few years. Many people attribute this shift directly to the outsized influence Sanderson has on millennial and younger Mormon communities. The church has always been staunchly anti-party on politics. That’s even more true now.

It’s not a climax. This is why people hate AI.

Like I get it if people want to be mad about churches in general, but a little dose of reality is needed on this topic because people are just making stuff up.
