Huge congratulations to LNMA stalwart and Associate Professor of the Instituto de Biotecnología-UNAM Adán Guerrero who this week received México's highest recognition for young scientists for his research output, particularly in the field of super-resolution microscopy.

Congratulations to Andrés Saralegui for his two decades dedicated to excellence in microscopy and community support as an academic at @ibt_unam. His experience has been and continues to be a key pillar supporting the LNMA and its activities.

Insights into the structural changes that trigger receptor binding upon proteolytic activation of Bacillus thuringiensis Vip3Aa insecticidal protein Author summary To exert toxicity, Vip3 tetrameric protoxins are activated by larval gut proteases facilitating the formation of lytic pores that destroy the midgut epithelium cells killing the susceptible larvae. Here, we demonstrate that the proteolytic activation of Vip3Aa protoxin is necessary for triggering receptor binding. Binding analysis of Vip3Aa protoxin and activated toxin to S. frugiperda midguts and toxicity assays against Sf9 cells, confirmed that proteolytic activation is necessary for an efficient binding to the insect midgut membranes and for toxicity. The analysis of residues from domains III, IV and V, that become exposed after Vip3Aa activation by proteolysis, allowed us to identify a structural binding epitope which plays an important role in receptor binding and toxicity. Our results indicate that the structural change that Vip3Aa undergoes after activation by larval midgut proteases, besides being important for membrane insertion and pore formation, also triggers receptor binding important for toxicity.

Together with the #LNATCG of the @ibt_unam the LNMA has passed the re-validation audit for 2024. Congratulations to all the staff of the LNMA for their hard work and dedication in ensuring compliance and creating the best experience for our users.

Congratutions to the newly graduated Master in Biochemical Sciences Angelica Beltrán Rodríguez who pioneered the application of dSTORM techniques in Mexico, celebrated in style with food, liquid refreshment, good company and even an impromptu stand-up "comedy" performance.

Wrap-up day for the Mexico-Guatemala workshop including a lunchtime plenary lecture from UW-Madison's @KarlaEsbona on Spatial Omics tech. Let's keep the collaborations coming!
