Thereβs also more risk when you pay more for a player, which is always going to be greater in the Premier league.
03.03.2026 12:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Nice 𧡠on NUFC from Chris. Hey, being in this privileged position is special, but - as Chris covers succinctly - my appreciation of how Pep, Klopp, Arteta, Slot etc are able to cope with demands has increased massively this year. I know about resources but even Iβm exhausted from all the games.

Some financial musings on missing out on Europe 𧡠#nufc
The media mutterings is that it's Europe or bust. Whilst being in the CL each year would be lovely the reality is only Arsenal and City (Liv?) can guarantee that. For the rest of us we have to be more pragmatic and the club will be.
Should've recalled Targett and played him as a striker apparently...
#nufc
Yeah. Well said. The legacy teams have the revenue to misfire and we absolutely do not.
02.03.2026 21:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My concern with a rebuild whatever that may be is that you sell or release 4 or 5 then need 7 or 8 to replace them. Better quality than what is there and better backups on bench... Then there's the cost? Ross Wilson and the likes have a huge job whatever route they take
02.03.2026 20:55 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Such a terrific thread. I am still very much in on Howe, especially as heβs never (this past summer doesnβt count for a variety of reasons) had financial backing to bring in substantial players. I do believe heβs taken the current roster, as constructed, as far as he can. #nufc

The solution to this many games is squad depth. The solution to squad depth is the wage bill. The solution to the wage bill is revenue increase.
Unless you hit incredibly lucky with a vein of young players/swings on cheaper deals, it's very, very hard to compete in the UCL & EPL without top 6 revs
Looking at who moved and who we needed in January (Full Back/Centre Back) there was only 1 or 2 actually moved - the rest stayed put - tells me quite simply there wasn't anyone who either wasn't a massive risk financially or performance/adaption who could come in
02.03.2026 10:57 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0But how to even rebuild? Intensity used to be our identity, but what is it now? Our old game plan does not scale to the CL calendar we want to have, so where do we turn next? What does Newcastle do well to build on for next season? A lot of interesting problems for our man Ross to solve. 8/8 #nufc
02.03.2026 06:02 β π 15 π 0 π¬ 2 π 05. It seems clear that our exec team looked at the fixtures/table/roster in January and saw no feasible way to stay in CL spots with a transfer here or there. It feels like we should expect a re-set in the summer, but we've all thought that before. (7/8)

...we've actually gotten less physical and have pivoted to skill players. It has not really worked so far.
4. Not original, but PSR has truly stunted class mobility within the PL. If you established financial dominance in the pre-PSR era and have legacy revenue from it, it is hard to fail. (6/8)
Be so good that your rotated team can beat Brentford on 3 days rest.
3. Newcastle used to be the most physical team, but now that level of physicality is Premier League table stakes: you cannot *start* to compete until you have that. With more matches and bringing in more skill players, ....(5/8)
...concurrent competitions. It does make me appreciate what Pep has done more.
The fact that Newcastle have played as many matches as of today as Everton will all season is being used as an excuse, but really that's what the challenge is:.. (4/8)
2. It's clear that NUFC/Villa and the like will ping pong at the margins of Champions League qualification season after season, because none of us will have the depth and PSR to maintain the pace of matches in consecutive years. Only the overwhelming quality of City/ARS can dominate in 4...(3/8)

I always assumed that the Peps/Artetas of the world wanted Champions League ready players, but it's clear teams of that caliber NEED CL-ready players. There is not in-season training time to improve that much when you're always in 4 competitions.
(2/8)
So, the Premier League part of this season is clearly going to be a disappointment. I have more than a few thoughts on this.
1. I'm still an Eddie Howe fan, but it's clear that his best skill - individual player development - is incompatible with the kind of calendar that we had this year. (1/8)
We used to be the physical team muscling the others off the ball, but you can't play that we for 70 matches, so we don't....but we haven't thought of anything better yet.

5 or 6 more tries this season and we may actually get a result against City.
Seriously though, that looked way better than our Carabao cup efforts.
