The homogenisation and consolidation of buisinesses and brands has led to the erosion of the midlist, the indie movie or band or comic. There's a real sense of "I'll only try media that's already popular / famous," and I'm begging you to look for the weird shit, the experimental, the niche.

All of this. ALL OF IT. Part of the reason I read 90-95% indie is because so much of what is trad published is the same. Formulaic, predictable, and published because it will make money, not because of its own inherent value as expression or craft or art.

All are true from experiences I’ve had with them. I have a box of ones with issues meant to be sold.

I don’t know anyone who has used IS and doesn’t have a story. I still use them for some titles including alternative covers.

At discount, they can get you into more stores. They offer the ability to sell your books directly through them (US only) so you don’t pay the fees to be on other sites. I have two books linked on my website for it. Buyer orders and IS sends it directly to them. Buyer has to pay shipping tho.

I pulled 1 book from them due to low quality printing. If you have a jacket half will come w/ them catawampus. If you order copies to sell 25%+ will come damaged & they refuse to stand behind their quality. I am not putting anymore books with them. 90 days after pub they charge $50 for any changes.

They both reduce your compensation by print costs. Amazon charged 4.58. IS charged 6.63 for the same book.

It will take 3.6 sales through IS to equal royalties paid through Amazon for one book.

Though it’s not the most effect. Amazon now also has an option to distribute to other book sellers.

Why do indie authors often only sell on Amazon? Same title cost to the reader for paperback. Ingram Sparks paid 0.89. Amazon paid 3.21 for the same book. Why — IS requires you to allow a discount to stores to put it on their shelf/site. Minimum is 35%+ depending on region.
