der seine Jahreszeit verlegt hat
so weich, so warm
als hätte jemand den Winter
unter eine Decke geschoben
und vergessen, ihn zu wecken.

Die Luft riecht nach Frühling
doch die Straßen wissen es besser.
Sie tragen noch den Klang
von Weihnachtstüten
und unausgepackten Plänen

Amaryllis are a festive favorite because they offer dramatic, long-lasting blooms right in the middle of winter, with colours and symbolism that fit perfectly with Christmas and New Year traditions. They are associated with beauty, pride, strength, hope and renewal, themes that resonate with ideas of light, resilience and new beginnings during the festive season. The name itself is linked to a Greek word meaning “to sparkle,” which aligns well with the glittering, celebratory mood of Christmas and New Year. The plants commonly sold as “amaryllis” mostly belong to the genus Hippeastrum, native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, with some species extending into Mexico and the Caribbean. True Amaryllis (especially Amaryllis belladonna) are a separate but related genus originating in South Africa and naturalised in mild coastal regions of places like the western United States and Australia. Large bulbs from South Africa and South America were introduced into European gardens in the 18th century, where they quickly became prized greenhouse and conservatory plants. Systematic breeding of Hippeastrum began in England around 1799, and by the mid‑19th century hybrids were being cultivated in the United States, with major breeding centres later developing in the Netherlands, South Africa, the US, Japan and Israel to create the large‑flowered hybrids sold today. With their ability to bloom indoors during winter in temperate climates, amaryllis bulbs gradually shifted from being mainly collector’s plants to popular seasonal gifts and decorative flowers. Today millions of bulbs are exported each year, especially to North America and Europe, and the plant is firmly embedded in Christmas and New Year traditions while still carrying echoes of its ancient Greek name and mythic love story.
