An important new book from @ellydezateux.bsky.social shows 'how environments were politically constructed and contested, and how environmental concerns inflected politics'.

Mexican artist Miguel de Herrera, β€œPortrait of DoΓ±a MarΓa de la Luz Anna Margarita Marcota” (1778) β€’ This girl with frizzed and powdered hair is probably around 12 years old. She appears to be in mourning, as suggested by her black dress, black choker necklace, and the miniature portrait she wears on her wristβ€”which may be a picture of her recently deceased mother. β€’ The black spot on her left temple is known as a chiqueador. These fake beauty spots were made from fabric or tortoiseshell, and originally contained herbs that were believed to alleviate migraine headaches, like a compress. Over several centuries, they evolved into "beauty marks" for upper class women in Mexico. β€’ This girl's expensive jewelry, incredible lace collar, and confident attitude suggest that she comes from a family of high social standing.

Happy Sunday, Blueskiis

Just hanging out at the wonderful San Antonio Museum of Art, wondering about this exquisite portrait of a young girl in 1778

β€’ Why is there a big black spot on her temple?
β€’ And why is she showing me her (not an Apple) wristband?

In 1758, during the Seven Years' War, English privateers captured the Bremen merchant ship Concordia. The subsequent legal battle preserved something remarkable: the ship's complete archive. ⛡️

I have so many books at home and at work, and I've rearranged my shelves so many times, that often I struggle to find a volume I know I have and find it easier to just go to the library than track it down. All of which is to say, I think I need a librarian. Or fewer books. πŸ—ƒοΈ
