by @asparrowsfall on tumblr Let's take a look at what makes dialogue unique to a character. I'm gonna list these as bullet points first, and then i'll suggest some exercises to explore these aspects of speech. Most important aspects - focus on these first Vocabulary - the words they use. As subset of this: Complexity of words, which can include: Syllable length Likelihood to be used in casual conversation - a character can be very smart and still use very informal language. Cultural touchpoints Culture can include pop culture references - think Tony Stark’s nicknames for everyone, i.e. “Point Break” and “Underoos” How in or out of sync the character is with the story’s setting with regard to both time and place - are they from a different country or era of time than their peers? Important - Check these out if you have time How likely the character is to speak their mind vs. change the subject - this could be for any number of reasons, from fear to duplicity Amount they say / Introvertedness / how reticent they are - This is somewhat related to the above point, but not necessarily, and should be researched from different angles. Subverting a topic is not the same thing as being afraid to talk about it. Different ways of speaking with different characters - this could be a function of story (i.e. how a character who is captured speaks to their captors as opposed to friends) as well as pure Code Switching Deep cuts - Advanced aspects of speech Fluency in the language they are speaking Accents - You do not have to write a character in an accent, i.e. spell the words differently to show the accent, if you don’t want to. It really depends on the piece (usually how light hearted or humorous you want it to be) whether you do or not.

Dialogue analysis exercise Find five (or more, but at least five) representative lines from your character’s canon dialogue. If they don’t speak, don’t have five lines, do the best you can. (I imagine other forms of communications can probably also be analyzed in this way, but I’m gonna focus on dialogue for now.) These are going to be your key phrases. They need to be from canon and they need to be words that really show off who your character is.

1. Say the words out loud. Read them again and again. What do they sound / feel like? 2. What is the average syllable length? How many long words do they use? 3. Do any words jump out at you as archaic? What about modern pop culture references? 4. What is a different way they could have said this? Write some alternate versions of this phrase and figure out WHY the character didn’t say it this way instead. What is the difference between the canon dialogue and the alternative? Try to be as specific as possible. It’s as important to know what they wouldn’t say as what they would. 5. Look up any of the more complex words and find some similar ones, with a similar level of complexity. Use a thesaurus you trust and possibly also Wordnik. If your character doesn’t use ANY complex words, reflect on that. Why? What’s their reason? How does that fit with the rest of their personality? 6. Think of some other characters from other pop culture pieces who speak in a similar way. It doesn’t have to be 100% the same, but if it can help your ear get used to some new-but-different phrases, it’s enough. You’re training your brain to speak like the character. Start to sort phrases they would say from ones they wouldn’t. How do these two characters differ? 7. Now that you have worked thoroughly through your key phrases, start to imagine these lines said in something other than the original context. What if they were said to a different character? WOULD they even be said? What would change? What would happen if your character was scared / hurt / overjoyed / sick? 8. Finally, after all that, write some NEW dialogue for your character, either as practice, or right into your fic draft. Keep using your key phrases as a guide and go back to canon as much as you need to! You can do this!

“I love you.” The Exarch, handing his soul vessel to Nao. He’s turning into crystal but his smile is serene as he looks down at her. She’s holding the soul vessel tightly, tears streaming down her cheeks but expression unknowable. “I promised myself, when we meet again I will tell you.” G’raha is back in her arms, in his old clothes and holding on to his vessel, happiness evident on his face. “But here you are, safe and hale. By my side.” G’raha in his new clothes as a scion, talking with Tataru. He looks embarassed but pleased as she motions to him excitedly, proud of her work on his new attire. “Yet the words won’t come. How could they?”

G’raha is laughing, throwing his head back. His smile is radiant. “You’re so beautiful I lose my voice.” “Like stained glass, reborn from the best parts of yourself.” All three versions of G’raha are there, but his ct self and the Exarch have their backs turned. Scion G’raha looks ahead, a sweet smile on his lips. “Shining and bright, leaving me to watch in silent reverence.” Nao looks at him, eyes wide and full of wonder, a blush on her cheeks.

“How could I burden you with unrequited feelings, or tie you down to someone you’ve already sacrificed so much for?” She imagines him rejecting her, or showing tenderness to her. She’s not sure which one hurts more. “I have nothing left to give but loss, fire, and blood.” Haurchefant’s grave, overlooking Ishgard. Herself, loosing consciousness as the forest around her is ravaged by flames. A younger version of herself, hands bloodied and limp before a pool of blood and a knife. “And you have seen enough of those for a lifetime.” The Exarch, crying and bloodied but smiling; it’s good to be awake.

Back to the present. She approaches him and he looks entirely too happy that she’s coming to him. “So let me gift you my silence instead.” Her smile, wide and true. “In the hopes it brings you peace.” She’s fallen into easy banter with him. He’s embarassed as Tataru proudly shows her handiwork, Nao teasing all the while.

Old comic from 2023. Featuring my WoL, Elodie Aurifort, and Gaius Baelsar from Final Fantasy XIV. Set after the The Sorrow of Werlyt Questline in Shadowbringers. (Heavy Baelfort vibes) PAGE 1 -[PANEL 1] Elodie sitting next to Gaius on a bench at Terncliff, he looks down at his hands. Something weighing heavy on his heart. "It was brief, but I was able to speak with Alfonse..." The words fumble from his lips, "I apologized for failing him, swore that I would make sure his dreams were fulfilled." [PANEL 2] Gaius' eyes fixate on his hand, "Such a vow hardly rectifies the pain & injustice his siblings & him endured, but it was the most I could muster." [PANEL 3] "Considering how we departed at Ghimlyt Dark, I was prepared for him to reaffirm my failure." Elodie doesn't break her gaze, she hears this confession, it's the least she can do. [PANEL 4] The view shifts to a view of Gaius & Elodie on the bench from behind. "But instead... Despite everything..." Gaius' voice cracks, "He told me that he was proud to call himself my son."

PAGE 2 - [PANEL 5] Gaius' fist tightens, he is thrown back to that moment; his final goodbye to Alfonse. He failed them all, and yet... [PANEL 6] Elodie balls her hands into fists, steeling herself in preparation, "G-Gaius..." [PANEL 7] "I know you can only take me at my word, but--" she has to tell him, grant him this kindness and put this broken man's heart at ease, "Please know that your children loved you dearly!" She grabs his hand without thinking. Text is from top to bottom, left to right: Suri asks G'raha, who is laying on their chest, "Do you remember... When we talked about our tribes' courtship offerings a while back?" G'raha responds, "Of course." Suri goes on to say, "I've been thinking, I want to make one for you." G'raha seems stunned for a moment by this, but then he busts out laughing.

Suri looks a bit annoyed while G'raha laughs. They say, "Hey. What's so funny?". G'raha, through laughter, says "It's just that... Since we talked about it, I thought I'd like to try and make one for you, too.". Suri is the one who is stunned now, but they smile and immediately tackle G'raha down, saying, "Oh yeah?".

Suri hovers over G'raha and says, "Then... Let's exchange them soon, eh?" before leaning into kiss him. G'raha replies that he's already started on his, to which Suri says, "Upstaging me again, huh...". G'raha simply says, "Naturally."

On the left is Suri's U Tribe Offering. The text reads, "Hunts were dangerous in the U tribe, so these were mostly given as a keepsake, or for good luck and protection. Depending on the items used to create it, it could also symbolize romantic intent. (Keep me with you always!!) The items Suri chose shows that they are really into this guy. A quote from Paulo Coelho follows this that reads, "The dunes are changed by the wind, but the desert never changes. That's the way it will be with our love for each other." The items used to make Suri's Offering are as follows: Red clay (fingerprint), Dried Bloodgrass, Heliodor Drops, Lock of Hair, and Sundrake scales. G'raha's G Tribe Offering is on the right, and says, "In the G tribe, handcrafted jewelry was common, so their offerings are styled more as jewelry! It's a bit fragile, but that is because it's meant to be mended over and over by the one who made it. Earrings are considered to be especially romantic, as it is a highly visible sign of someone's claim." Following this is a quote from Krystal Sutherland that reads, "I never realized that you could fall in love with humans the same way you fall in love with songs. How the tune of them could mean nothing to you at first, an unfamiliar melody, but quickly turn into a symphony carved across your skin, a hymn in the web of your veins; a harmony stitched into the lining of your soul...". The items G'raha used to make his offering are Griffin semiplume feathers, a moonstone, and a copper disc that was hand hammered.
