The bike lane confuses bad drivers so let me explain: a car is not allowed to turn in front a cyclist. That's failure to yield the right of way and unsafe lane change.
This confuses bad drivers because they haven't read the driving handbook about this.

I wrote about a similar situation, which my experience saved me that time. In both cases better driving and infrastructure is the solution.
Even if a rider chose to ride in most deferential way to cars, they still could be hit.

My thought is I expect drivers to hit me and I might have slowed at that intersection. But the driver is 100% at fault. There was no decision to yield or not. Experience is not the cause.

If I had braked hard to yield to this bad driver maybe I would skidded out. I did something I would not recommend; while I braked, I stayed close to the car so the driver knew I was there. The driver did brake when she realized she could not get around me.

I'll jump in here as an experienced cyclist that arguing that experience is the answer to bicycle safety is single vision.
Once I was descending in a bike lane when a car came along side. It was matching my speed of 35 and edging over: I correctly read the driver was going to turn in front of me 1/
