Similarly, when bad ideas win the day in an election, it’s much worse to embrace them than to oppose them with the faith and understanding that they will quickly discredit themselves.

The lesson is not that politicians should waste-basket good ideas that poll poorly, but put in the rhetorical effort to bring people around.

It is important whether an idea is good or bad, something that—when implemented—will impress or repel the public. This requires intuition. Popularism dismisses the whole notion. But tariffs and ‘mass deportation’ show you can make ideas people hate in practice seem good through language and vibes.
