Day 2 with NeuchΓ’tel and we’ve been exploring the garrigue. This is a Mediterranean scrubland habitat based on limestone soils. We found specialist plants, including orchids. Although small, one of our highlights was finding the dung beetle 𝘚π˜ͺ𝘴𝘺𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘀𝘩𝘒𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳π˜ͺ rolling its balls of dung.

A very good start to our year with 509 species recorded on @inaturalist.bsky.social during the UniversitΓ© de NeuchΓ’tel field course. Highlights were Early Spider Orchids, plus Southern Festoon butterflies. It will be exciting to see other universities rise to this challenge in our 2025 league table!

We had a great first day with our visitors from the University of Lincoln. We explored the local habitats around the centre, and deployed our first camera traps for the week. Highlights on our walks were a paper wasp on her nest and a Violet Bird’s Nest Orchid: a parasitic species with no leaves.

Yesterday we spent a fantastic day with MSc students and staff from Lincoln, exploring the Causse MΓ©jean. Plenty of orchid species, plus lots of birds of prey. Highlights were a very close fly-by by Short-toed Snake Eagle, plus fighting Przewalski Horse stallions at their conservation site.
