Something that I think about less than I should but more than never is how the media backdrop to my toddlers lives is just full of this stuff that’s made by toxic characters, largely men, who write fantasy worlds for kids while being unable to conceptualise women as people or themselves as predators

Typically, a Doctor would petition your patron gods, the Insurers, with placating words or sometimes even repeated forceful invocations of higher power for permission to enact changes to your body before proceeding with the application of tonics, poultices, and other primitive mediform treatments.

My basic rubric:

A good one I use for when someone is saying things about someone else, making a racially or sexually charged joke/comment, or just bc I can tell professionality won't get me anywhere in the moment is to act super confused and be like "I don't get it." "What does that mean?" "Wait explain that."

Cordial but Firm Anti-Creep Phrases ”This is a [professional space] and I’d really appreciate it if you’d act accordingly.” “I’m not interested in discussing my personal life.” AND/OR “I keep my personal and professional life separate, thanks.” “I really don’t think that’s appropriate behavior/to say at a [professional conference]. Is there something else we can discuss?” OR phrase it as a rhetorical question: “Do you think that’s an appropriate thing to do/say at a [professional conference]?” “That is not what I’m here for. Due to recent discussions: when I worked at a library, I was trained on how to politely but directly respond to unwanted sexual comments. Unfortunately commonly-marketed fantasies about librarians mean it happens a lot.

Rehearse these. Be comfortable saying them forcefully, but politely.

It is really hard sometimes to keep the big picture in mind but whereas it was noteworthy that just two people were elected to Congress in 2018 who were openly and hyper critical of Israel, in 2026 it will be more than two dozen.
