The FFoC party for MAL was a success! 20 registered, 15 showed up. A big shout out to @burbjockguy.bsky.social for promoting it on his bluesky, @bdthonger.bsky.social for loaning me a sling for the event and @piercedbear.bsky.social for donating pads.

ABYSS-MAL I attended the @ffausten.bsky.social Abyss party at MAL this weekend, and I left quite disappointed due to some logistical shortfalls that I view as inexcusable on the part of the organizers and/or venue, particularly given the price point (I paid $98 including fees, for reference). I provide these criticisms as someone who has organized many @phillyphisters.bsky.social play parties, so I am intimately aware of the behind-the-scenes effort that goes into making a play party a success.

The Abyss party was scheduled from 9pm until 2am, and around midnight, paper towels started to become in short supply. Rolls of paper towels started being replaced with the kind of flimsy folded paper towels you find in an airplane lavatory, not exactly what you want wiping lube off your hole. Both kinds of paper towels were only ever found on a few tables scattered around the venue, there were no bungee cords to hold a roll of paper towels on every sling like you find at most other fisting parties. Finishing a session and then having to run to find some paper towels is hardly ideal. The tables scattered around the venue also held the puppy pads, which were replaced about 10 at a time by venue staff. As you can imagine, these pads got snatched up quickly, so I had to hunt around quite a few times for pads. While the staff was pretty good about restocking, why they restocked so few at a time was baffling to me given how quickly they were getting used up.

In addition to the play supply issues, there were also insufficient play surfaces for the attendees. If I wanted to play with someone, we had to hunt around and wait more than a few minutes for something to open up. I understand that slings are expensive and that they only have so many, but why did it take 2+ hours into the party for mats to be put down in the middle of the floor for people to play on, as was done at the beginning of the party last year? As soon as the mats were put out, they were full for the rest of the party, to not have had them out from the very beginning is inexplicable. The @ffausten.bsky.social team is not new to running play parties nor are they new to running parties at the venue, which made these shortfalls even more frustrating. To charge a premium price while failing basic play party logistics in so many ways is unacceptable for an event of this size and prominence. I only hope that improvements are made for future events.
