If you are worth anything it will hurt you, but it is the best adaptation of a book into a movie I’ve ever seen, and it is astonishing filmmaking, and it is a howl of grief and anger and love in the face of whatever it was that happened in the capitol today. 3/

The filmmakers invent a symbolic motif of an alligator that is not in the book but (along with so much else in the film) underlines the danger, violence, and viciousness in this country. 2/
Watching Nickel Boys today of all days in history was something else. It encompasses our history and our present moment, and the incredible beauty and vulnerability of Black boys and men and the traumas they have and do endure. 1/
