The filmmakers invent a symbolic motif of an alligator that is not in the book but (along with so much else in the film) underlines the danger, violence, and viciousness in this country. 2/
Watching Nickel Boys today of all days in history was something else. It encompasses our history and our present moment, and the incredible beauty and vulnerability of Black boys and men and the traumas they have and do endure. 1/
