And third, I think having well-written trad game modules fills a lot of this purpose in games that would need it. Modules are fun and designers should make them for their games!

Secondly, plenty of combats don’t! There are games that are more resistant to larger/smaller/weaker/stronger groups in combat, and there are games that eschew “balance” entirely—games that intentionally have no opinion on whether a party ends up as a smear on the ground

I think there’s a few sides to this. First, I actually think that certain well-designed “rules lite” games require storytelling from the GM, but not what I’d describe as game design (certainly not in any mucking about with numbers or mechanics sense).

Homebrew and house rules are game design, and you should do them only if you like game design. You should never be required to do so, and you always have the potential to do bad game design, especially if you have never or only rarely played the game you’re trying to design for.

And for many people, a much smaller cognitive load than “hit us with your improv set”

All mechs of course come up with fully modular internals and a bio-linked control rig!

I think the only take on Magma that worked was in the Abnett and Lanning run where she fails to get a job at Applebees, and then later takes The Devil from The Bible on a date at the same Applebees

I think the best way to make Magma work in an X-Men comic (short of replacing her entirely with the version from X-Men Evolution) is to lean into the fact that she's kind of a fail(grand)daughter who sucks
