Put it together: How close is Trump to ordering attacks on them, too?

I was unaware that one’s status as a veteran (former member of the armed forces) could be so easily changed.

Let’s break this down: he served in the Air Force. His service ended, his status changed to “veteran”. But at some point, his status was rescinded and he became a ”former” Air Force veteran. But the “was” puts the sentence in past tense. So he is no longer a “former Air Force veteran”.
