Maybe 1.7 will change Clint’s whole deal so he’s not so repulsive (it kind of has to, who would marry him otherwise?) but comparing him to Shane is laughable.

People who overcome addiction and depression (Shane) are strong. Creepy incels who hide in the bushes watching girls (Clint) are losers.

You can like or dislike Shane if you want. You can like or dislike Clint if you want.

But one is a depressed man with an addiction.
The other one is a creepy incel who stalks his crush and doesn’t improve himself.

Clint has no such arc or improvement. He still pines (creepily) for Emily no matter how well you get to know him, never improves as a person, never acknowledges his mistakes. He sticks with the ‘woe is me’ bullshit the whole way through to the point where interacting with him is a drag.

Shane is a depressed alcoholic with a chip on his shoulder. But get to know him and you’ll find that his arc involves him growing as a person, becoming more positive, kicking his habit, improving his relationships, coming back from a major depressive episode, and breeding his beloved chickens.

One of the comments I’ve seen from Clint defenders is ‘Shane is a loser too, why don’t you have a problem with him?’

Woo boy! Let’s unpack that uncomfortable statement.

Okay unlike a lot of other people I’m not angry about Clint being upgraded to marriage candidate (‘disgusted’ is a better word for what I am lmao 😖) but I gotta rant for a sec and say something about Clint’s defenders coming out of the woodwork and comparing Clint with Shane of all people.
