The 2-IngredientΒ Carajillo PutsΒ Espresso Martinis to Shame ThisΒ Mexican coffee cocktail is your pick-me-up on a lazy summer afternoon.

Have you ever tried a carajillo? Even better than an espresso martini www.bonappetit.com/story/caraji...

If yes, and there isn't a real public need to see the image anyway, the answer was don't print it.

Obviously SO much has changed since those days.

But it's making it really hard to engage here without taking on horrific psychological trauma on a daily basis.

Back when newsrooms were the main sources of information, this was taken into account.

In my journalism ethics class in college, my professor called it the "Wheaties test" β€” would this image deeply disturb the audience first thing in the morning?

Yes, there are times when public information needs should trump our discomfort.

But we've absolutely lost any safeguards or ethical considerations about what gets shared, when, where and why.

The plane crash recently is a good example. How does an individual consumer approach their feed without constant anxiety about what they'll see next?

This can't be good for us.

One of the biggest issues with social media β€” which I am largely a fan of β€” is never knowing if the next video that autoplays on my feed is going to be something horrific, like where people die before your eyes.

Grief and wonder: New York Times photographers captured the moments that defined 2024.

Homicide is down 30% year-to-date in DC this year. Violent crime down 35%.

Is this news to you? Probably, because most media focuses on stoking fear about crime through anecdote, rather than actual data

What do we as newsroom leaders owe our people? The old ways aren’t working and we’re losing good people because we’re not supporting them.

I simply love the thoughtfulness here from @joeruiz.bsky.social about mental health in journalism. Check out his words and connect with him to follow his work at Stanford

Fun fact: #ER vets Noah Wyle (Carter) and Eriq La Salle (Benton) have new shows β€” Max's #ThePitt and Prime Video's #OnCall β€” premiering the same day, Jan. 9. And it just so happens to be a Thursday!
