I don't generally share my syllabi with anyone who asks for them. Why? Because doing so opens the door to illegal political constraint.

My university (all universities) have processes in place for complaint about course content. Faculty control course content, not the general public.

I offer courses which cover material routinely described as "controversial." I assign materials that some people might object to, on political/ideological grounds.

Those materials must be taught. Instructors must be allowed to do their work, and students must have the right to learn without abuse.

This puts a target on instructors' backs. It clears a path for abuse and endangers student safety.

In Middle East studies this is tied rather directly to Trump administration policies and threats against international students in particular. Who has the ability to honestly and candidly engage in a classroom discussion on a disfavored topic when Trump's DOJ is trying to deport some for doing that?

There is no justification for this. SJSU is a unionized public university. These are battles we really can't concede.

The Regents and UC President could wake up tomorrow, realize the cost of their complicity, and recommit to restoring UC to a place for unfettered inquiry. And it will still take years to fix what they've broken.

I'm shocked the govt is still trying to deport Georgetown scholar Dr. Suri. ICE abducted him and spirited him to multiple facilities, always in chains. He wasn't allowed to speak with a lawyer for one week! A judge finally ordered him let go after two months. Dr. Suri studies PEACE.
