We had ham sometimes if there were too many people for one bird but I associate it more with Christmas.

I never had mac and cheese for Thanksgiving as a kid either but I’m white and from upstate New York. I think it’s always been popular in the South.

We’ve been making brisket the last few years (my wife doesn’t like traditional Thanksgiving food) and it’s been great. Much less fuss and the leftovers are great for sandwiches.

My logic is I know I like everything else but since I’ve never had green bean casserole I’m not really giving anything up.

The fact that England and France were still deporting thousands of criminals overseas at the same time as they were building those empires weighs against the idea that they had successfully eradicated the crime gene.

Green bean casserole definitely. Never had it.

Was too taken aback by the scenery to get many pictures but here are a few shots of Ghost Ranch. Definitely heading back up that way soon.

Went to the Meow Wolf here this morning for the first time in more than a year. It was fun seeing what’s new and what’s stayed the same.

one of the underrated factors for the rise in scamming across U.S. society is the death of local media.

I lived in dairy country in Idaho for a few years. Whenever I was driving back from Boise I knew I was almost home when I started smelling the cow shit from the interstate.

I don’t believe in ghosts on an intellectual level. I’ve also felt unsettled in enough old buildings and battlefields in New Mexico that I’m going to be very respectful of whatever’s going on.

That’s my take too. I find her constant lashing out annoying but who knows how any of us would act under those circumstances. And her behavior does seem to match her personality, she was a bit of a misanthrope before.

And even if the polls he cites on abortion and vouchers are accurate, that just means a lot of people who disagree with the Republicans in the Legislature on those topics are willing to vote for them anyway. What does it matter what you tell a pollster if you vote for the opposite outcome?

18.11.2025 05:51 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The votes were almost exactly the same. The arguments were very similar; people on both sides talked about both bills in the same breath. And they’ve kept passing anti-LGBTQ laws every year since. They’re not going to stop if you cede ground on sports or the Pride flag.

18.11.2025 05:02 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The framing on the sports issue is a little frustrating too. I was covering the Legislature when they passed Idaho’s first-in-the-nation trans sports ban. That same year they also passed a bill banning trans people from changing their IDs and birth certificates.

I don’t know why you’d deny that there’s a big gap between the views of most Boiseans vs most of the rest of the state. Pointing to a few areas of agreement might make you feel better but it doesn’t change reality.

Focusing on divisions, New York Times missed where Idaho is united | Opinion If we are to steer clear of the fever tearing North Idaho apart, we have to find issues less likely to provoke the Legislature | Opinion

I get that there’s a natural instinct to push back when it feels like a place you love is being criticized by outsiders but this is pretty blinkered. I’ve got my quibbles with the NYT piece but it hit the mark more than this response does.

I'm now convinced that Nick Offerman was born to play Chester A. Arthur, and we deserve an Arthur biopic starring Mr. Offerman now-ish. At turns hilarious and calculating and ridiculous, he's the warm blood of the flick.

If anything the taste was a little better than a regular Stella. Seemed a bit heavier and breadier. (In a good way.) If you like beer but can’t drink I’d say it’s definitely worth trying.

I had some of the NA Stellas a year or two ago (friend bought them by accident) and they were pretty flavorful.

Don’t think I would seek it out β€” I’d still rather have either actual beer or, if I’m not drinking, a soda or something β€” but it was better than I expected.

I’ve avoided a couple of would-be muggings just by holding my head up and acting like I knew where I was going. Even if they probably would have won most people aren’t looking for an actual fight.

The one time I did get mugged I was taken by surprise and way too intoxicated to put up any defense.

I’m no expert but in the 18th and early 19th centuries in the South and frontier areas there was a fighting style called β€œrough and tumble” where the goal was to maim an opponent. Gouge out an eye, bite off an ear or nose.

Also i'm so fucking tired of people talking about the end of the roman *empire* as if it were relevant to the current era (no you fucking idiots, can you look up from your military history novels for ONE SECOND and read about the end of the roman *republic* for once ffs)

You can be pretty racist and still think slavery is wrong, a lot of Northerners didn’t necessarily believe in equality but also thought it was wrong to chain and sell other human beings. Which isn’t a great outlook but it’s much better than the vision the South was fighting for.
