Familial Abuse It shouldn’t have to be ‘just the way it is’ for trans people

There may be an expectation to fit gender roles and presentations not aligned with your identity Your family might force you into a marriage or relationship against your wishes Family may knowingly and consistently misgender and deadname you

Your family may dictate who you speak to about your transition and make choices about how you present in front of others Your family might police you in the home and outside, controlling where you go and who you see Your family may use slurs and derogatory language to refer to you and your gender

As trans people our tolerance for mistreatment can be higher due to our oppression and the external messages we receive. We have compiled some behaviours that may indicate familial abuse. If you’re living with family and it feels unsafe, call 07902 478958 or make a referral on our website.

Our community is small and have limited support networks. If you know a trans+ person who is a victim of abuse your presence is valuable. Make sure to listen to their experience but don’t suggest what they do or say. It could endanger them. Make sure to signpost them to a DA service

Moss from Loving Me was delighted to be able to speak at this week’s Trans and Non binary inclusion event for practitioners working with survivors of sexual violence. This regular and very well attended event is hosted by the wonderful SARSAS
