Ellie is one of the most off-putting characters I can remember being asked to give a damn about by a movie, the protagonist by default because everyone else is worse

Gloria Grahame herself leads kind of scammy workhouse orphanage that takes dead kids out of the freezer and puts them in infirmary beds when the inspector comes around, but she doesn't seem very interested, and either the movie's trying to make her look sweaty all the time or just didn't care not to
