The grueling shoot, and Kubrick being unfriendly as a trick to make her acting better, got warped into him “making her cry” and basically owning the performance, which wasn’t really acting on her part. Absurd

My pet theory is that it’s mostly from the abusive genius director being a thing people liked as a filmmaking myth, because people are gross, so distorted stories of what this shoot was like would get rolled up with things William Friedkin actually did as one would thoughtfully ask “is it worth it?”
