Hear me out: a Bride of Frankenstein / Scream 3 double feature: Studio horror sequels that were forcibly made to lean more into slapstick comedy than their predecessors due to a cultural shift in how media is permitted to portray violence (Bride=Hays Code, Scream 3=Columbine)

Yeah, it’s easy to point out how this is weaker at what SCREAM was doing but I have to admit I like what it is. That it gets into condemning sexual exploitation of Hollywood actors like its own exec producer was doing, I can’t figure. I should listen to the commentary track some time

I’m also a sucker for this kind of movies about movies, with its jokey narrative halls of mirrors where Carrie Fisher plays “the one who didn’t sleep with George Lucas” and Jenny McCarthy is an actor complaining about things also true of her own role

And I like the smooth Panavision style of a Wes Craven movie where he’s not very interested. CURSED also looks fabulous, except it’s too terrible to sit through just for that

Oh no, seen it before. It is pretty fascinating where it goes for the seamy side of Hollywood with its producer’s blessing

SCREAM 3 I didn’t see for a long time after it came out, and of course like any horror gay it’s at least ten times since but for a serial rewatcher of everything it still seems fresh and, despite being spat out as an obligation, pretty fun. Although as a fan of Jay and Silent Bob, awful cameo scene

I like it in all honesty, but that includes liking things such as the smooth, well-franed visual style of a Wes Craven movie where he wasn’t interested

Oh I don’t hate it! But I can’t unlearn how grudgingly it was made haha

I think it was around during one of those times I was staying with relatives who had a Pay-per-View unscrambler, I remember the pan & scan version very well

we’re skipping 2 because my guy is gracious and I myself have seen SCREAM 2 many times for some reason, I wasn’t really trying to. He’ll watch it later

There are none I hate, but after really liking 5 a lot I found 6 lesser. My man thinks it was a big improvement, we ought to stage a debate some time

I love how there “should” be one more scene that’s different uncut, but was retained as-is for the R because Craven lied to them about only doing one take so as not to upset Drew Barrymore. (IRL they did multiple times and she was fine with it.)

Anyway I have long since edited those bits into the better-looking Blu-ray edition for our home viewing, and had it ready to go last night

don’t know what the source is for the digital bootleg someone handed me once but doubt it’s the U.S. laserdisc, the one and only release I know of that was both uncut and widescreen. Apparently some DVD release, somewhere (not here), did it once. Or maybe laserdiscs just look better than I remember

I’m pretty sure the director’s cut of SCREAM (on 35mm film anyway) was lost in the same incident that seems to have destroyed most of the Weinsteins’ 1990s-era trailers

But I refuse to let the MPAA have the last laugh, we watch it uncut every time 🥰
