And I’m a sucker for underdog sports narratives. (Really, that’s the crux of my beloved Queen’s Gambit.)
But even that angle fell really flat.

Funny, I kept thinking about the line in BlackBerry, β€œI'm from Waterloo, where the vampires hang out!” and how much better it worked there. The casting of Mr. Wonderful didn’t work.

Marty Supreme was terrible. Hamnet, too, sadly.

Jessie Buckley doesn’t like cats, Timmy scoffed at ballet and opera. What other recent Oscar drama have I missed?

β€˜The Bear’ Set to End With Season 5 at FX and Hulu The series is currently filming in and around Chicago.

A masterpiece of writing, directing, acting. No other show has made me think about my past, my family and my F&B days, like The Bear.
And Seasons 3 & 4 are slept on.

On the top ten of the decade. Heck, might be among the best songs of the 21st century. Fight me. (No, I’m a pacifist. But I adore this song. I even have a poster in my office.)

Magnolia is truly a masterpiece. Phantom Thread made me think about sacrifice and compromise in relationships. DDL does not overact, and Vicky Krieps is my LΓ«tzebuergesch heroine.
OBAA has a sense of humor, something I haven’t seen in a PTA movie since Punch Drunk Love.

Leo? I’m glad he finally got the Oscar for IΓ±Γ‘rritu’s The Revenant because his work with Scorsese was always so over the top, especially Killers of the Flower Moon.
I will say this about PTA: His three-hour films fly by. I’ve seen Magnolia so many times! Never aware of the running time.

PTA directed two of my all-time favorites: Magnolia and Phantom Thread. I’ve never been too crazy about his other acclaimed works, like There Will Be Blood (so histrionic) and The Master (so self-absorbed).

It seems like a good day to gather front pages and apply some critical discourse analysis. Agency springs to mind...

Both? But Nirvanna the Band is not an actual band; therefore they could never get a show at the Rivoli.

The Nirvanna-verse is complicated. Part of its charm.

Oscar nominations ballot!

Oscar nominations ballot!

I’ve seen all the major nominees except Hamnet, which we will watch early next week.
I’m really not feeling this year’s slate of movies. Last year, I was obsessed with Flow and cheering on Sean Baker.
Sinners should win everything, but I predict OBAA come out on top.

Something I will ALWAYS repost. Pierre Bourdieu and I, in the same introductory paragraph. Clare is the best.

My mom fell and spent a day on the floor unable to get up. (Those β€œI’ve fallen and I can’t get up” ads are much less funny when you have an aging parent.) She’s okay, just bruised up. When my sister found her, she called 911, and the nice EMS lady politely scolded Mom for not wearing her LifeAlert.
