It's it watered down compared to its inspirations? Yeah, of course. It's Stranger Things. It's all watered down. But definitely better written in terms of pacing, dialogue, executing ideas, literally everything that the show struggles with.

SUSPICIOUS MINDS by Gwenda Bond, the 1st of the tie-in novels for Stranger Things that touches on the psychic espionage subgenre. Think SCANNERS and THE FURY.

DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN by Adam Christopher, the 2nd tie-in novel to Stranger Things. An urban cult horror story in the same vein as GOD TOLD ME TO.

My hottest take on Stranger Things is that it gave two really good tie-in novels that are better written than the show and manage to touch on two flavors of genre fiction popular in the 70s/80s mass commercial paperbacks era. Psychic espionage thriller and Satanic cult/urban horror.

i read them because i want to know what people outside of the bubble generally might say… hasn’t really changed since i had to deal with it myself. underlying sentiment is still “keep games pure” “ games and art should be clean”.

art isn’t always going to make you comfortable. it’s treating art in this puritan sense where it has to please you, then it’s just a consumerist product… and we have these storefronts (payment processors too) constantly dictating what counts as art. in hypocritical ways. it’s grim really.

i know you’re not supposed to read the conversation in the comments but the conversation is depressing and anti-art in all the typical ways to justify censorship… like there’s so much to unpack here especially with how quickly people paint art as “abuse” when it discusses difficult topics.

Eggers and Del Toro’s are going to make you chew on that food for thought, but also throw in a pie they literally throw in your face. It’s not like they’ve reached a happy medium between arthouse and camp, so much as they’ve shown the two are inseparable.

Obviously, these are serious films for an older audience, with heavy thematic elements and meticulous use of symbolsism and metaphor, and yet they go hard on the violence, hard on the melodrama, and even hard on the comic relief here and there to the point it’s gaudy.

I love how in Robert Eggers’ NOSFERATU and Guillermo Del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN, we now have two well-respected, high profile directors who demonstrate the link between high art and camp.
