I was ten when Vandar first came to me. Life took me through judo mats, lecture halls, and distant lands, but the story waited. Now retired, I'm telling the tale I've carried since childhood. It's time the world met him.

I recently published my 3-minute read, "Defining God Into Existence: It Fails Theologians and Scientists Alike." If you like it, please clap for it. Click & hold the applause button to fast-clap to the max of 50; it makes me very happy.

Did someone in your life teach you strength without ever saying the word?
Tell me about them.
And if this story brought someone to mind... maybe share it with them, or someone who needs to hear it.
That's how stories live on.
(7/7)
My father died before I finished writing Vandar's story.
He never saw the books.
But I hope, somehow, he'd understand.
That all the heroes I ever imagined...
Started with him.
With his silence.
With his hands.
(6/7)
When I shook hands with colleagues in Japan, or drew maps on a chalkboard in New Mexico, I'd sometimes glance at my own hands.
Scarred now.
Callused.
Familiar.
I was becoming him, one quiet day at a time.
(5/7)
Years later, I'd become a professor.
Travel the world.
Write stories.
But I never forgot that first winter morning.
And those hands.
They taught me more than any book ever could.
(4/7)
I shoveled until I couldn't feel my fingers.
He never said "good job."
But when we finished, he poured me black coffee. No sugar.
I drank it like it was a medal.
That was the first time I saw him smile.
Not big. But real.
(3/7)
His hands were red and cracked, the kind that knew tools and silence better than softness.
He never explained much.
Didn't have to.
In our house, love didn't come with hugs or words.
It came through doing. Through showing up.

My father's hands
I was ten when I started working.
Not because it was fun.
Because it was expected.
Minnesota winters don't care how old you are.
That morning, my dad handed me a snow shovel and said nothing...
Just nodded toward the sidewalk.
