That strikes me as right: there is also a big influence from the Gestalt psychologists one would assume.

This is not equivalent to the underdetermination of perceptual content relative to the non-conscious information that is registered by way of proximal stimulations of retinal receptors in the form of 2-dimensional (sensory) light arrays.

The problem of perceptual presence is couched firmly at the phenomenological level at the supposed 'inadequecy' of what is explicitly give in perception to the overall sense of the perception

'[A] major part of this problem is to explain the transformation of the registration of light intensities on retinal receptors – a two-dimensional array – into perceptual representation of, and as of, entities in three-dimensional space.'
