Most of Erewhon’s revenue comes from their prepared foods and smoothie bar. Prices for these are on-par with restaurant takeout. The groceries are there as convenient extras. “Oh, since I’m getting a sandwich might as well pick up milk too”. Very few of their customers visit for groceries alone.

Apartments are much more affordable than single-family homes. SB79 legalzies many new apartments.

I think the whole system is very stupid and look forward to sending my kids to public school but the “top” highschools do send many kids to the Ivys. It’s not just a handful from each school.

Conventional wisdom is that we need to lean into crypto, gambling, etc. to win back young voters which IMO is completely ridiculous.

Almost no one is building new apartments in Los Angeles. Here's why
The supply of fresh rental units, which make up the bulk of new housing in Los Angeles, is petering out despite robust demand.
Good article on the very bleak state of housing construction in Los Angeles. Permits are collapsing and yet LA City Council keeps coming up with even more restrictions.
@gavinnewsom.bsky.social desperately needs to sign SB79. Cities like LA can’t be trusted at all.

I’ll re-evaluate if/when we see any evidence that his actions are negatively polarizing people against housing. Haven’t seen it yet.

But ultimately he’s just one guy. He wrote a book, made some good arguments. Sometimes he writes things that aren’t so good. Whatever - take what you like, ignore the rest. I don’t really understand the intense focus on everything he does. If you like him great. If you don’t, that’s fine too.

And maybe it’s opposite of what you fear? Maybe him talking about such a wide variety of issues has given him a large enough audience to meaningfully shift opinion on lower salience issues like housing reforms?

Where’s the evidence of people being negatively polarized by Ezra Klein into opposing housing reforms? I don’t solely credit his book but California, one of the most liberal states in the country, is now making progress in a way we’ve never done before. His actions can’t be that bad!

What events are you talking about?
We got our asses handed to us in 2024 and lost major ground with voters who we made the center of our outreach for the last 10 years. Perhaps scolding is in order!

“How he’s conducted himself“ is writing columns and recording podcast episodes from a center-left perspective which is what he’s been doing for the last 15 years? I don’t follow the discourse as closely as I used to but I genuinely don’t get why he‘s become such a lightning rod for some.

Maybe we’ll look back 5-10 years from now and realize Abundance was very unhelpful but in terms of what is happening today California abolished CEQA for most infill and passed SB79 with Newsom himself crediting the book so it doesn’t seem to be hurting yet?

Yes! He himself says Twitter was one of the main keys to his political success. The Apprentice made him more well known but Twitter is what brought him into politics.

I quit Twitter last year, and largely ignore BlueSky now also.
Information is a bit slower to get to me, but I feel no less informed or motivated than I was before.
Anxiety is was down though, and I don’t find myself so angry anymore either.
Social media isn’t worth it. Shut it all down, IMO.

This last-minute deal could stymie a new Santa Barbara apartment building
The 270-unit is proposed behind the city’s historic Mission, and in the district of incoming Senate president Monique Limón.
A bill proposed Monday night, just days before the end of the legislative session, would punch a very small hole in a landmark housing law passed earlier this year that appears to apply to one (1) proposed apartment building in the incoming Senate leader's district.

Paging @liamjdillon.com! The incoming Pro Tem using her power to sneakily block a project in her district is an abuse of public trust. This is exactly the type of scandal that we need journalists to shine a light on.
If Limón is willing to do this now, what else will she do once in power?

So YIMBYs can’t even be in the same room as moderate Republicans? SB79 would have failed last week if not for a Republican vote.
It’s just a conference - not the High Committee on Defining YIMBYism - and even then the participants are majority left of center.

He's obviously a conservative writer and his views on immigration are much more restrictive than mine but he is by no means a ghoul and the freakout about YIMBYs participating in a conference with him is IMO very overblown.

I don't think anyone has actually read the Charles Fain Lehman article because he basically argues that the way to avoid all the due-process violations happening with undocumented immigrations is to dramatically beef up the immigration system (e.g. courts, judges, officers, etc.). Not totally wrong!
