Then I remembered something else: one of my childhood friends was a cop who was fired after he left a handcuffed suspect im the street to go and take care of a personal problem. That’s how I got the idea to handcuff Xiaowu to a pole. We shot this final scene without knowing what people’s reaction would be. We had only one can of filmstock left, just enough to do three takes of the scene. We didn’t control what happened with the bystanders.
