I wrote about the conflict over national identity, the need to reclaim patriotism from the Right, and the struggle between two traditions that are both authentically American:

White male supremacy vs. the egalitarian promise of democratic pluralism.

Three decades of housing discrimination suits, Central Park Five ads, birther lies and “shithole countries” talk — the record was always there; what changed is people finally stopped pretending not to see it.

Trump’s racism hasn’t changed in a decade; what’s changed is his poll numbers. The moment his grip weakens, the same Republicans who stayed silent for years suddenly find their voices—proof that their loyalty was always to power, not principle.

I honestly think they overplayed their hands because their equal frothing rage over everything means their screaming just kinda becomes background noise after a point.

I’m not willing to entertain the debate about whether or not the GOP (and really, America as a whole) is racist. That debate is over. The answer is yes. The debate that they really want to have is whether or not being racist is actually a bad/morally objectionable thing.

"Pointing out racism is worse than perpetuating it" is a well known principle among white supremacists who don't want to publicly admit they are white supremacist.

I would argue that it’s driven by a significant number of white American’s emotional dysregulation and dysfunction, but I feel you. Orange man bad. But orange man is supported by millions of white Americans and we have to live with these people long after Trump is gone.

At some point, solving this is going to require a group of GOP officials joining a national front with Democrats, & the longer we pretend that Chuck Schumer & Hakeem Jeffries can Green Lantern some other solution, or Dems are just going to win in 2026/28/forever, the more we're deceiving ourselves.

sometimes i think about that thing a disco elysium dev said in response to someone asking why choosing fascist options lowers your morale. that being a fascist is miserable, since it requires you to believe that you are being dominated by the weak and unworthy in everything you do.

Being a fascist is a deeply demoralizing experience. You have to not only radically alter your worldview to make reality fit into your unhinged schema, but that worldview is predicated on the notion that the weakest, most unworthy degenerate worms on the planet are somehow overpowering and humiliating you on a moment-by-moment basis. In mechanical terms too, the lowered morale also reduces your volition score—the more you indulge in your delusions, the less you are able to exercise self-control and self-awareness. The point of fascism being mechanically detrimental—the ludonarrative theme—is that fascism is an unequivocally self-destructive ideology, the practice of which only serves to nurture that self-destructive urge and turn it outward. It's not like Dark Side points in KotOR where you can access cool new abilities and get to enjoy being such a nasty lil rascal; you are not supposed to enjoy being a fascist in Disco Elysium. Fascism is the act of self-deception in service of making your own life more painful, solely for the payoff of making life more painful for people you dislike.
