Why would they? If Americans didn’t hold him responsible for January 6th they’re not going to hold him responsible for anything 🀷

What is β€œUn-American”? We must acknowledge America’s history of state authoritarianism and racial violence – but also dare to claim its aspirational tradition. Make MAGA un-American, finally.

Let’s Make MAGA un-American, finally.

I wrote about the conflict over national identity, the need to reclaim patriotism from the Right, and the struggle between two traditions that are both authentically American:

White male supremacy vs. the egalitarian promise of democratic pluralism.

Three decades of housing discrimination suits, Central Park Five ads, birther lies and β€œshithole countries” talk β€” the record was always there; what changed is people finally stopped pretending not to see it.

Trump’s racism hasn’t changed in a decade; what’s changed is his poll numbers. The moment his grip weakens, the same Republicans who stayed silent for years suddenly find their voicesβ€”proof that their loyalty was always to power, not principle.

I honestly think they overplayed their hands because their equal frothing rage over everything means their screaming just kinda becomes background noise after a point.

I’m not willing to entertain the debate about whether or not the GOP (and really, America as a whole) is racist. That debate is over. The answer is yes. The debate that they really want to have is whether or not being racist is actually a bad/morally objectionable thing.

"Pointing out racism is worse than perpetuating it" is a well known principle among white supremacists who don't want to publicly admit they are white supremacist.

you have to remember that β€œracist” is like the n-word for MAGA

Big night for JD Vance at the Olympics:
⛸️”American star Alysa Liu almost missed skating in the short program becaue Vance’s motorcade was in the way.
πŸ—£οΈ The opening ceremonies crowd booed wildly when Vance popped up on the Jumbotron.
Oof

Special elections do not have the built-in Republican advantage that the electoral college bestows, so I’m optimistic, but I’m also very cautious

I didn’t say, Republicans, I said white people

I would argue that it’s driven by a significant number of white American’s emotional dysregulation and dysfunction, but I feel you. Orange man bad. But orange man is supported by millions of white Americans and we have to live with these people long after Trump is gone.

The jury is still out on whether or not Americans will punish the GOP for this. To wit: January 6th and β€œBlack immigrants are eating pets!!”

Trump posts racist video about the Obamas.

The POTUS is sharing memes of Black Americans as gorillas. To every single person who gaslit us about him and the people who voted for him not being racist, you've been an acute part of the problem the whole time.

2/ Why is there a reluctance to engage with the possibility that the main selling point for many voters when it comes to a racist & immoral candidate, IS the racism & immorality? What if their concerns include views hostile to democracy & certain ethnic groups in the US?

Pour one out for every professional political pundit, writer, consultant whatever that has spent the last decade trying to pretend that the Trump phenomenon was about trade or opiates and not a big chunk of white america losing its mind over having a black president bsky.app/profile/kyle...

Don't agree with Cato Inst on much. But:

Very glad they have quantified what has been obvious for years.

The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023.

The Cato study provides the first-ever 30-year analysis of the fiscal effects of immigration on government budgets.

This part of our response essay is where I'm at. Boiling down all of politics to electoralism has been absolutely terrible for resisting rising authoritarianism.

At some point, solving this is going to require a group of GOP officials joining a national front with Democrats, & the longer we pretend that Chuck Schumer & Hakeem Jeffries can Green Lantern some other solution, or Dems are just going to win in 2026/28/forever, the more we're deceiving ourselves.

sometimes i think about that thing a disco elysium dev said in response to someone asking why choosing fascist options lowers your morale. that being a fascist is miserable, since it requires you to believe that you are being dominated by the weak and unworthy in everything you do.

Being a fascist is a deeply demoralizing experience. You have to not only radically alter your worldview to make reality fit into your unhinged schema, but that worldview is predicated on the notion that the weakest, most unworthy degenerate worms on the planet are somehow overpowering and humiliating you on a moment-by-moment basis.

In mechanical terms too, the lowered morale also reduces your volition scoreβ€”the more you indulge in your delusions, the less you are able to exercise self-control and self-awareness.

The point of fascism being mechanically detrimentalβ€”the ludonarrative themeβ€”is that fascism is an unequivocally self-destructive ideology, the practice of which only serves to nurture that self-destructive urge and turn it outward. It's not like Dark Side points in KotOR where you can access cool new abilities and get to enjoy being such a nasty lil rascal; you are not supposed to enjoy being a fascist in Disco Elysium. Fascism is the act of self-deception in service of making your own life more painful, solely for the payoff of making life more painful for people you dislike.
