I can honestly say I've had fewer instances of open or covert sexism in 10 years than I did in the 4 I spent trying to break into an art career.

I've been working as a scientist for 10 years now. It's far from a perfect field, but after horror stories about how male-dominated and sexist STEM fields are compared to the arts and humanities, I can say that hasn't been my experience. The majority of my coworkers are women and I'm openly gay.

-going to portfolio days and open critiques and workshops, submitting and showing art in local shows--it was clear that my work and efforts weren't appreciated next to my male peers. This was confusing to me as I was constantly reminded that the arts were "friendlier" to women and more "liberal".

When I was young, Pixar was my idea of a dream job in the arts. I loved painting, drawing, and animation and my greatest goal was to pursue it professionally. I never got as far as that. Even as a teenager setting up for a career in art--applying to art schools, attending an arts magnet high school-
