Too many people have been sold a dream that if they come to this country, they will be housed in a hotel and be able to work illegally. We have to break this model. As part of this, we have carried largest enforcement crackdown on illegal working since records began.

I know that securing Britain’s borders is important to you, and it’s a priority for this Labour government. I told Sky News how we are ramping up raids against employers who are using illegal workers, and pushing for stronger rules to deport foreign criminals.

I'm really proud of the Renter’s Rights Bill and today it is finally in force. Life will be better for renters in Nottingham and Kimberley, with no more fixed term tenancies and no more no-fault evictions. This is the difference a Labour government makes.

This government is committed to helping everyone who can work to find work. Last week I dropped into the Bulwell Jobcentre to meet the new service leader and talk about how we can work together to help people in Nottingham and Kimberley.

Labour are ramping up processing for asylum seekers, so that those in legitimate need can move on to rebuilding their lives, and those with no claim are returned as quickly as possible.

Recently, I had a chance to meet with the Romanian Roma community in Nottingham. It was really valuable to hear about the challenges they face and their ideas for how local services could better support them.

This week, Nottingham Women’s Centre are fundraising to provide life-changing counselling and help support women in Nottingham when they need it most.

At last week’s Labour Conference I visited some stalls that constituents had encouraged me to, to hear about their priorities and give them my support.

Recently I joined local residents, councillors and staff for a walk around Southglade Park. It’s always a beautiful walk, and we had a chance to pick up a few opportunities for improvements around the park.

Last week I visited Royal Mail’s Bulwell delivery office. It was great to be shown around and see how they organise the huge amount of deliveries they get every day, and to have a chat about plans to deal with nearby parking issues.

This is for the 97, their families who fought for justice, and everyone who has been let down by the state, from Windrush to Grenfell.

For my first time at the despatch box as Minister for Border Security and Asylum, I sent a clear message to rogue employers.

We will not allow you to hire illegal migrants at the expense of British workers.

Update on my campaign for better phone signal in Kimberley

I was honoured to be the special guest at the Midlands Nepali Mela last month. It was a fantastic occasion to celebrate the contributions of the Nepali community to our city and I was blown away by the hospitality I was shown.

The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill is back in Parliament today. Labour is giving communities first refusal when assets of community value are put on sale, like youth clubs, leisure centres, sports grounds and pubs.

Recently I had the chance to have a walk around Top Valley with the Police and Crime Commissioner and local councillors. There have been investments in the area to help tackle anti-social behaviour, but if you’re experiencing issues I want to hear from you.

If you can’t tell, that’s the Bulwell High Road traffic light hiding in that tree. It’s obviously unsafe, so I worked with local Bulwell councillors to get the tree trimmed back and now it’s looking much better. Let me know if there are any issues near you that need attention!

Recently I visited Bestwood Pharmacy along with Community Pharmacy Notts to hear about the important work they do for the local area. I heard about some of the challenges that local pharmacies face when serving their patients, which I’ll be raising with the minister.

It was an honour to raise the flag this morning at Kimberley War Memorial to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. We will always remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served to secure peace and freedom for future generations.

I was out with the Toy Library for the second time this week today, this time out at Bulwell Hall Park for National Play Day. It was great to see so many families enjoying themselves and making use of the space - a huge thanks to the Toy Library for all their hard work.
