It is sad how gullible so many media actors are. Trump creates a problem by initiating a trade war, calls the trade war (partially) off, and by the numbers has us in a worse place than we started out. This is called a win.

There are plenty of things from the previous version of US democracy that need to be set aside. Due process, freedom from unreasonable searches and other similar protections most definitely deserve to be maintained.

It's not hard to understand why a guy with Trump's history would view due process simply as the way guilty people get away with crimes.

Hopeful signs these past 48 hours that we are gonna beat this authoritarian regime and send them packing. Conservative thought leaders advocating for a mass anti regime movement. SCOTUS showings signs of acknowledging reality. Powerful organizations refusing to obey in advance. Regime balking.

obviously Bukele has given his spin, but if a single senator can spring Kilmar for margaritas, then it has become exceptionally awkward for the President and his entire executive branch to insist there's nothing they can do to get him back to the US.

In some ways we academics are built for this stuff. Make them use as much effort as possible on every single harassment effort. We just want to be sure we are all following the rules!

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

First follow up with lots of "clarifying questions." Clarify statutory authority to be seeking this information among other things. Then do that several more times. Then just tell them what a journal is. Then refer them to attorneys. Just make them do a bunch of half assed work.

One problem that seems common among elites is that they expect there to be some way to take on fascism that is easy and risk-free, which is absolutely delusional.

America is on the clock to stop the current regime's authoritarian consolidation. It is indisputable in my view that authoritarianism is here. We may well be headed toward totalitarianism.
