Despite an incredibly long day from 1030am to 11pm spent there, I'm grateful a) flu was all she had b) it didn't cost her anything to receive those services, and c) there are caring staff who work in challenging situs.

By 8pm my friend was feeling better thanks to the IVs and anti nausea meds usually used for chemo patients. But we couldn't get discharged to free up a spot till 11pm because the only 2 doctors there were dealing with 2 emerg codes and couldn't assess and release her. We need to empower RNs.

These 2 young kids were given the number for the 24/7 clinic, told to make an appointment with them, and told to take their beautiful but manic depressive mom home to watch over her. 😥 Such a heavy weight for 2 so young.

Then there was the story of the young 9yr old there with her mom who sat in a wheelchair. After 6+hrs they went into an exam room where the older brother joined (17-19?). At 10:30pm the doctor said their mom's tests had all come back clean...her troubles were mental health. A manic episode.

The elderly woman in her 80s who appeared to have dementia as well as some physical ailment. And her son who had to try and keep her there for the 6+hrs they waited. This isn't how we should treat those most vulnerable. 😥

/ been sent upstairs but at 15 days, hemorrhaging at her C section (which they dressed before back to wait) she had to nurse her infant while the poor anxious dad hovered to give her privacy.

Problem #3 - making those in extremely challenging situations, beyond their medical situs, wait in public. An Indigenous man under the influence had shat himself. The only assistance security telling him not to sleep. A Muslim woman 15 days post natal - at 14 days and under she would have instantly/

Problem #2 - making those whonare coming to Emergency wait in line to be seen by Triage We waited 45 min in line. My friend needed a wheelchair as did many others. Bakeries (and other emergencies) have figured out the "take a number" system, so can Grey Nuns.

We knew we would have to wait and checked the AHS website for wait times. Grey Nuns said 2hr 3min. The lowest in Edmonton (though Leduc showed 57min). At the end of our 12hr journey we overheard a nurse say "anyone checking that needs to double it." So that's problem #1. Better data analysis needed.

First off, the nurses, doctors, and healthcare staff were amazing. This isn't about them. It's about the overarching supports that are not available to those that they look to serve.
