Breaking News!
Code Yikes!
As of yesterday, Antarctic sea-ice extent set a new minimum for 2025 at 2,086,000 square kilometers. This makes 2025 extent lower than the minimum reached in 2024 and the second lowest minimum on record, behind only 2023.
Will it go even lower? The climate 8-ball says...

25.02.2025 22:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In many ways the fight isn't over. FOPL warning labels are a great start, but El Poder is going further. They are continuing to expose the acts of industry in taking over human rights + impacting health in Mexico

They continue to support and promote the FoPL warning labels, including a 'junk food day of the dead' to celebrate their success in getting warning labels put on food packages.
Intimidation tactics continue, especially via social media. There is always the risk that the regulations will be revoked
Website displaying scientific evidence regarding FOPL warning labels
Letters of support from international agencies + the public health community
El Poder gathered the scientific evidence for warning labels and this is available on their labelling website + took this evidence to judges to show their effectiveness.
They also gathered letters of support from the international community, including UN bodies.
Industry argued that FoPL warning labels didn't have scientific support, were unconstitutional and that industry wasn't sufficiently included (even when they had the majority in many of these discussions!)
The supreme court over-ruled the judgement by industry and deemed the action constitutional
Images of the two documentaries produced
Image of projected signs on the front of Coca-Cola HQ
So what did they do?
- they produced two documentaries uncovering the role of industry in food regulation in Mexico & the impact on health (available with English subtitles)
- projected 'excess interference' onto the Coca-Cola headquarters in Mexico (lots of media attention)
The context:
- use of FoP nutrient-based labels were ineffective
- industry self-regulation
- a strong history of revolving doors between industry (esp Coca-Cola) & high-up government roles
- industry had close ties with journalists e.g. paying for their travel and sponsoring them to attend events
Christian Torres is from El Poder del Consumidor, a consumer advocacy organisation which campaigns for honest and clear information for consumers on food (among other amazing things!).

Climate change is moving faster than scientists projected & they're not totally sure why. One possible explanation is declining cloud cover. If that's true, we may be entering a feedback cycle that accelerates warming much faster than we've modeled.
