This is something that I never wanted to happen. Something that I study in my own research. My life circumstances led me to this new voice, and I'm still learning how to be comfortable with it.

Since then, I have published many papers, written a thesis and a dissertation, and now I am writing my first English novel (after two decades of not practicing). It is a bittersweet moment because my Turkish is fading away as my English voice grows stronger.

14 years ago today, I took the TOEFL exam in Istanbul to apply for grad school in Canada. I spoke French throughout my teens and had a degree in French–Turkish interpreting. I knew very little English and barely passed TOEFL.
