I have a healthy distrust for the government (and I worked in it) but some things are conspiracy theories and others aren’t. I don’t know how to explain to folks that the ban was correct so I think I’m gonna stop trying. We just don’t read history books and we suffer the same mistakes.

The US can sue and subpoena Meta bc it’s an American owned company , they can’t do the same for Tik Tok. Additionally payment data ( usually done through US companies) isn’t equivalent to a company that can manipulate data, images etc and use the algorithm as a propaganda machine.Two separate cases

I hate that everyone thinks they are smart when they aren’t. Sigh

Or we can ask why two Presidents, Congress, senate, and Supreme Court can universally and unanimously agree that a foreign company owning our data is bad. Also let’s not compare a clothing company to a data company that can manipulate data and spread propaganda. Let’s be intellectual honest here

Additionally, Twitter and Facebook are not legal in China. We should ask why we are willing to give the chinese access to customer data why they would do the same for us. This isn’t about govt overreach as much it’s about people willing to give up their sensitive info bc they want to scroll

The government didn’t shut down the other apps because they are American companies. Cambridge analytica is only possible bc the US govt could sue Facebook for its data. We can’t sue a Chinese company to understand how it’s using data to manipulate and spy on customers.

Will be spending more time on the app not controlled by right wing media
