The people of western North Carolina deserve our level best, and I remain committed to working alongside our federal and state partners to accelerate their recovery.

I continue to urge DHS both to act swiftly to ensure local governments receive quick reimbursements for storm-related expenses and to approve the buyouts of people’s property in the flood zones.

I’d like to thank our federal partners, particularly the North Carolina Congressional delegation, for their work to unstick this much-needed assistance.

Today North Carolina received more than $90 million in FEMA reimbursements that will help replenish the depleted coffers of local governments in western North Carolina working to rebuild after Hurricane Helene.

As we commemorate 250 years of these United States, let’s remember that our strength lies in working together to live up those ideals. A great future lies ahead for NC and the United States.

You still have time to register and vote in-person by visiting an early voting site in your county through this Saturday, February 28th. Check your county board of elections for early voting locations and hours.

It’s an honor to continue to tackle this and other critical issues at this year’s Emerging Issues Forum. The forum, a vision of the late Gov. Jim Hunt, began 40 years ago as a way to bring together people from a variety of perspectives to build a safer, stronger, and more resilient North Carolina.

We need clean, reliable water for drinking, growing crops, manufacturing, and generating electricity. That’s why it’s so important to work together to make sure North Carolina has access to clean and reliable water.

If we believe our kids are our future, we must invest in public schools. It’s past time the General Assembly invested in a fiscally responsible budget that puts our kids first.

Last year, North Carolina public school students:

🎓Had the highest graduation rate in state history
✏️Outpaced the country’s growth on AP tests taken and passed
👷Earned a record number of industry-recognized workforce credentials

It was great to visit with teachers and students with Superintendent Green and see how investments like this improve student outcomes. I’ll continue to fight to make sure our kids and teachers have the resources they need to succeed in the classroom.

Bluford STEM Academy created Advanced Teaching Roles, a program that provides teachers with opportunities for career advancement and mentorship without requiring them to leave the classroom.

68,000 members of the Lumbee Tribe call North Carolina home. They are a vital part of North Carolina’s history, and I look forward to working together to make sure they have access to the federal resources that will help them grow and thrive.

It was an honor to celebrate the long-overdue federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe along with the NC Commission of Indian Affairs in the People’s House.

I’m proud of the progress we are making at the DMV, but we know we are not done. We still have plenty of work to do to ensure North Carolinians have a fast and easy experience at the DMV. Let’s keep NC moving!

Last April, the average wait time at the DMV was almost 3 hours. We’ve reduced wait times by more than 75% -- we’ve gotten it down to less than 40 minutes.

We’re investing $43 million to strengthen infrastructure to make our rural communities more competitive and give people opportunities to have great jobs close to home.

These investments will make North Carolina more resilient against future disasters, address forever chemicals like PFAS, identify and replace lead pipes, and ensure access to safe and clean drinking water.

GOOD NEWS: 66 counties across the state are receiving more than $472 million to fund wastewater and drinking water infrastructure projects.

My heart goes out this morning to the family of Master Trooper Stien Davis, the NC State Highway Patrol, and the entire law enforcement community mourning the loss of a son, a friend, and a colleague.

I’ve offered Colonel Johnson any support the Patrol may need during this difficult time.

The President’s tariffs have created chaos. Getting off the rollercoaster ride is good for North Carolina farmers, businesses, and families. Folks are already struggling with the cost of living, so let’s keep working to lower costs, create economic stability, and generate growth.

We might sometimes disagree on policy, but we agree on the foundation of what America is: We are all equal and have the inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and the government of, by, and for the people is supposed to protect those rights.
