Washington Av. Bridge to Open to Vehicles Back in 1937 Alderman Heny Bank said, "The Washington Av. bridge is in the worst condition it's ever been in. Not only should it be closed to football traffic, but should be closed to all traf fic." From that day were discussed on plans for new bridge. After nearly 30 years of talking and three years of e building, the new two - level structure will open for vehicle it traffic Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The bridge will be open to two-way traffic in the south lanes only. Fifteenth Av SE. will be close at the same time time east of Johnston Hall. On Thursday only, eastbound Twin Cities buses will s turn right on 15th to Pills- it left bury to liverso mon left to Union St… and right to Washington Av. There will be no bus top at ar 17th Av. SE, and Washington Av. this day only. The course of westbound buses will be the same. On Friday all bus service will return to the normal routes. The old bridge will close to pedestrians and traffic as soon as the new one opens. Demolition will begin in December.
