Enjoy your baseball team tomorrow. Even if they are terrible. Even if they make you mad and frustrated. The offseason is long and the world is full of horrors. Even very bad baseball is better than waiting for spring.

Deforestation has killed half a million people in past 20 years, study finds Localised rises in temperature caused by land clearance cause 28,330 heat-related deaths a year, researchers find

Deforestation is never 'just trees'.

It’s half a million lives lost in 20 years because we stripped away nature’s cooling system.

We don't just need nature. We ARE nature.

Early ripening of berries in UK shows nature is under stress, say experts Hot summer also causing trees to shed their leaves as concerns raised over β€˜food gap’ for wildlife in autumn

Nature’s calendar is out of sync.

Across the UK, berries are ripening early & trees are shedding leaves. These aren’t signs of early autumn, but of ecosystems under stress from heat & drought. ⚠️

Our wildlife will struggle as food sources vanish too soon. 🐾

A Deep Dive Into the Biodiversity of America’s National Parks From the fog-drenched forests of the Great Smoky Mountains and lakeshore prairies of Indiana Dunes to the cliffs of the Grand Canyon and coral reefs of Biscayne Bay, the U.S.

Spent a few days analyzing the NPS species database. Some interesting findings:

- Redwood is the only national park with 100+ mammal species
- Only two parks are more biodiverse than New River Gorge
- Indiana Dunes has a ridiculously high biodiversity density (species/square mile)

Rhinoceros Auklet, by Mathew Schwartz

Today is World Seabird Day!

World Seabird Day was created to commemorate the extinction of the Great Auk, a flightless seabird last seen on July 3, 1844, and to celebrate the many incredible seabird species still with us, like this Rhinoceros Auklet, seen in British Columbia.
