brother, who was 20 months old. My real father divorced my mother and married the new lady, Carolyn. My real father did come and see me when I was born, but he told my mother that I looked retarded just because I had big brown eyes. My mom was a single mother with two kids in the early 60’s and had to work. She hired a babysitter for me and my brother. One day after my mom got home from work, a gentleman came and knocked on her door to pick up her babysitter to go on a date. After coming back to my mom’s house several times, this man got to know my mom, me, and my brother and asked her if all three of us wanted to go on a picnic. This wonderful man fell in love with my brother and me, and of course, my mother. They were married for 33 years until he passed in 1995. I miss my dad every dad. I still have this note he wrote me years ago. I love you dad. ❤️

I’ve always believed that it takes a special kind of man to raise someone else’s kids. My “real father” decided he wanted another family in 1961, right before I was born, so he left my mother for another woman who had a young son. My mother also had another child, my (more in alt)

The photograph captures a wide-angle view of the Whitby Harbour entrance in North Yorkshire, England. Once upon a time on a lane I was driving home through ice and flurries of half-arsed snow in a fabulous 1970s Toyota, with moss growing up its sides, which had formerly belonged to my granddad Ted, and I saw a naked couple sprawled across a car bonnet enthusiastically nailing one another, although not the bonnet of the Toyota, as that would have been significantly more awkward for everyone. About a week earlier, to save petrol so I had more money to buy lo-fi albums and singles made by disgruntled Americans, I’d switched the engine of the Toyota off to freewheel down the lane to my mum and dad’s house but then because I turned the wheel on the bend the steering lock had been activated and me and the Toyota had ended up in the hedge almost exactly adjacent to where the shagging couple were right now, and I thought, as I passed the couple, about what a good thing it was I’d learned that lesson a week ago as opposed to this evening. Instead I drove the Toyota the remaining half mile home in gear, seeing the remnants of the car that vandals had set fire to near our front garden and the amphitheatre of dense woodland where, until recently, armed men had been hiding from the police, and our shotgun-owning loner farmhand neighbour looking out his bedroom window with his night-vision goggles. But none of this was particularly unusual. It was just another 1990s January in north west Nottinghamshire.

Yet again, today, I've had a message from someone who used to support my writing telling me they no longer will, solely because it's no longer on Substack.

My writing is the same & just as frequent.

The sole difference is it's cheaper to subscribe & I no longer give money to venture capitalists.

I really thought that when these people supported me they were doing it because of what I wrote, not because they wanted to give money to a tech company with questionable political affiliations.
