Times are tough, but emails from prior students like the one below is what keeps me going!
"...Thank you for showing kindness in my times of need and for reminding me that I am capable of achieving the things I set out to do. You are an excellent teacher, mentor, and person!"
Just got this email. I have never been more proud to be a faculty member at my alma mater:
"A coalition of over 50 student organizations are holding a protest. We students have and will always value the facultyβs role as educators/mentors, and we recognize the invaluable service that you provide."
Just a few days away! Join us in New Orleans after the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco's meeting for a post-conference workshop on co-use of cannabis, nicotine/ tobacco. Presentations and remarks by @ajbravophd.bsky.social and @bentollphd.bsky.social

I am proud to lead @researchmj.bsky.social and am grateful to work with amazing scholars/leaders like @ericrpedersen.bsky.social (Editor-in-Chief of Cannabis). Please read our statement below about the science we will always welcome in our journal and organization!

This week my first ever undergrad honors student passed her clinical psychology dissertation defense. Further, one of my first grad students just accepted a position as an Assistant Professor. Very proud mentor!

A mentee just got this email after being offered a position last weekπ€¬:
"Due to a presidential executive order, the NIH Intramural Research Program has paused interviews for all postbac positions. NIH investigators will be unable to interview you or make offers at this time."

My kids are about to learn many life lessons π

Final grades have been posted and the semester is officially over. My first sabbatical has officially begun!
I look forward to catching up on research, grant writing, and traveling to see colleagues. Excited for my first trip in January to see my colleagues in Spain!
Today, I have reached 2 major research milestones:
1) 150 peer-reviewed publications
2) 200 peer reviews I have completed
Regarding my own pubs, this is a team accomplishment and I been fortunate to work with so many great colleagues! As for peer review, here is to many more!
As the kids get older, I get to introduce them to more movies. Tonight, we are watching home alone. I can't wait to see their reactions π.

I can't believe how far I (and my family) have come since then and how fortunate my 3 kids are to have resources I never had. #blessed

Officially, my first ever case of being plagiarized in science. Albeit, pretty sure in a predatory journal but it is so blatant I had to post it. This is what hurts science and leads to mistrust from lay people about the work we do!π€¬
I have posted fotos below as evidence!
I am about to achieve two milestones: 1) number of publications and 2) number of peer reviews I have completed. I would argue that my number of peer reviews has a bigger impact. Shaping science and researcher ideas via my peer review creates greater impact. We need to value peer review metrics more!

Work-life balance is impossible. Balance assumes things are of equal value/weight. I love my 3 kids more than my job, so there will never be balance. I can't spend equal time on both, and that is ok!
I now strive for harmony. That change in mindset helped me realize it is not an either or option.
Jaja, do reach out. I am interested in many fields. Hence, how I got to this number π.

I peer review a lot! Why? My rationale:
Part of my salary pays for me to conduct research. I view peer reviewing as part of research; thus, I do feel like I get paid (even if I wish more profit went to researchers and not publishers!). I also get to keep up with the newest research in my fields.
Something I love seeing is the beauty of different college campuses. This is my favorite foto I have taken at William & Mary. My alma mater and where I am a Professor.

If you say yes to writing a recommendation letter, but then don't turn it in you are a terrible person. The fact that people's careers are getting screwed because of lazy, incompetent people who don't follow through is infuriatingπ€¬.

For all applicants who have received graduate school offers (especially multiple), 2 pieces of advice:
1) Don't feel pressure to decide quickly. Take your time and weigh all the factors!
2) Feel ZERO guilt in turning down an offer. Choose what is best for YOU AND YOUR CAREER!
If you use Qualtrics and hate it when your questions/answers (especially in matrix form) don't extend the entire page, use the code below. Just add it to the "Custom CSS" part in Look and Feel.
.Skin .SkinInner {min-width: 1500px!important;}
.Matrix {max-width:100%!important;}
For people who refuse to peer review because they don't get paid for it, does your contract with your university (or place of work) not require you to do service? In my university, service includes service to my field via peer review. Thus, I am getting paid to peer review.
Am I missing something?
