People really need to look at Trump as a direct line from Reagan instead of an aberration.

Wasn't part of Uber's original mission preventing the mass investment in public transit that our country needed, with massive capital infusions from petrostates?

I'd argue that the success of the non-violent "MLK" civil rights movement was contingent on the presence of an alternative that didn't reject violence. No "I have a dream" without "The Ballot or the Bullet"
(some) assembly required, but these are great

Always thought these were cool, and seems like a good intro to "customs"

I accept that journalists do not care about the truth anymore, only about attention.
So, a leader who acts like a mob boss appeals to them. They all decided to take Von Papen's bet.
I did a bit of work on the shipbuilding industry a few years ago, and it was my understanding that the market equilibrium is basically in Hell because of aggressive subsidies and SOEs, which don't need to turn a profit.
From what I understand, Korea is struggling as well
I am aware that Japan was much less heavy-handed than Korea or, especially, China. In a previous educational incarnation, I was an Asian Studies scholar.
I distinctly remember that the Japanese scheme looked a lot like the pre-Reagan Jones Act regimeβa light subsidy to just make yards competitive.
*let's have
God I hate typos.
Japan also made some political choices that seem bright in hindsight, like subsidizing part of its shipbuilding industry and merchant marine.
Like I wouldn't be upset if there was political will to say "Bath/GD can only build X, lets let Sumitomo/ect build X + Y"
MattY has no core, nothing but wanting to be seen as clever in public. He's like Musk in that regard; he plays the game, says the right thing, but the second he talks about something you have legitimate expertise in, you realize it is a grift.
Noah Smith, Ezra Klein, and MattY are the same.
The funny thing is that I was educated in the US pre-"No Child Left Behind."
I learned a whole lot of stuff that isn't taught in contemporary schools- like actual labor history (thanks IL public education, and I feel like I have a healthy appreciation for my country.
I think people forget that less than a generation ago, teachers were largely the smart women of working-class families who taught school with the equivalent of an associate's degree, and remained severely underpaid because the occupation has been coded for women.
25.04.2025 21:05 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Media is not filled with the kind of people who held truth to power in the past- economic incentives no longer align with this, and most of the media are people who are already wealthy and complacent.
25.04.2025 21:00 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's hard to backtrack because the media would have to admit that, as a class, the media has been wrong-handed in the way it has behaved over the last 24 months or so.
I sincerely think that if this buries the "liberal media" trope, some good will come of it...
Yeah, I keep asking myself if this group would ever have someone like Bernstein, and the answer is now because you already need to be wealthy to work at the paper.

I have been telling my students that if the last 2 months don't kill efficient market theory, nothing will.
Mass motivated reasoning is at play.
Yup, I was planning on Minerva grants, but alas, the defense department does not need to approach conflict intellectually.
Because we didn't outthink our enemies, we were just more buff and warrior-like.
